Taking the dc to London and having a mild panic that I don't know where to go when I get off the train (yes I do have anxiety...)

We want to get the tube to either green park or Hyde Park. Probably Hyde Park.

I've tried doing a journey planner but I can't seem to get it to tell me where to go.

Picadilly line to Hyde Park?, where do I get on it?? Sorry, I'm useless!!

There are maps in the station to look at, plus members of staff who you can ask. I like to stop and stand still in the station so I can calm down the panic.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 25/08/2023 08:48

The Underground is very well signposted. Just don't try to rush and you'll be fine.

Clymene · 25/08/2023 08:48

The underground station entrance is clearly marked. The Piccadilly line is dark blue and you need to get it in a westbound direction. It's popular and well signposted as it's the line that goes to Heathrow.

fioritura · 25/08/2023 08:49

Use the Citymapper app

Baker111 · 25/08/2023 08:50

Download the Citymapper app. It’s excellent. Put in details of where you are going from and to and it will tell the best routes. It even tells you which exit to leave the stations from and the best place to sit- front or back of tube, for example.

LIZS · 25/08/2023 08:51

Yes the underground entrance is right on the main concourse near Platform 9 3/4 and Waitrose.

WhamBamThankU · 25/08/2023 08:51

Definitely look at one of the maps when you get off the train, there's plenty dotted about. Take a photo aswell for peace of mind

whereisthecheese · 25/08/2023 08:52

Use google maps, I find it brilliant. Piccadilly line seems to be what you need. Just don't pressure yourself to be quick and you'll be fine

Bemyclementine · 25/08/2023 08:56

Thanks all . I'd be ok on myown it's just having the dc with me.

this is why I always get a bit Confused with London and the TFL app etc, it will tell you to get on the line west bound or south bound… but when I’m in the station, all you see is Piccadilly line to Brixton (or whatever) or Piccadilly Line to Fulham. And as a none local, I have no bloody clue which of those is east or west or north or south.

I need an app that tells me “get the Piccadilly line towards BigTown or etc and your stop will be in 4 stations” or something.. does that app exist?

Most platforms on the underground are signposted as Northbound/Eastbound, as you approach, and they have tube maps for the line showing the stops.
If you did manage to get the wrong train, its easy to backtrack.

Bemyclementine · 25/08/2023 09:06

I wish it did, I need one that says "step off the train, walk left, down 28 steps, ....etc"

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/08/2023 09:23

Ask one of the staff in the station, they are a walking tube map. They've sorted me on many an occasion.

heldinadream · 25/08/2023 09:26

@Bemyclementine if you can explain better where you need to be I can probably help Op. Green Park tube station is a bit off to the east in fact on the edge of Green Park, not Hyde Park. The tube station you call Hyde Park is called Hyde Park Corner, there's also Marble Arch, Lancaster Gate, Queensway and Knightsbridge directly bordering on the park and others nearby so you really need to know where you're going before you choose which station you're heading for.

maxelly · 25/08/2023 10:10

Ah OP I get the anxiety but I promise you, London is really easy to navigate, everything is so well signposted, loud clear announcements everywhere and (contrary to popular opinion) most Londoners very friendly and all too happy to help visitors especially parents with kids (just please don't stand on the wrong side of the escalators or block the platform entrances!).

Either green park or Hyde park corner are on the Piccadilly line (dark blue), as soon as you get off the train head towards the ticket barriers and you should fairly quickly spot signs directing you to the underground (make it a game for your DC, who can spot the tube logo first, who can spot Piccadilly line first etc). The staff at the barriers will point you in the right direction if you're not sure. If at any point you need to regroup, faff with a buggy or gather your children, do so but find a spot to the side, like I say Londoners are perfectly nice but there's a flow of foot traffic around busy stations and you will cause a jam if you stop dead in a high traffic zone. IIRC correctly at Kings Cross it's a fairly long walk down to the tube platforms, probably multiple sets of stairs and escalators (there are lifts too if needed but again probably more than one), and there maybe more than one entrance so don't be confused if you see that. There are also lots of intersecting lines at kings cross (circle/Hammersmith and city/victoria/northern etc) as well as Piccadilly so once into the underground station there will be a , but just keep looking out for the dark blue. Use the big luggage gates at the tube barriers (do NOT try and squeeze your DC through the regular barriers!), kids under 12 are free and you can use your regular contactless card or gpay/apple pay on your phone to tap in and out. Again staff will help and direct you as needed.

At kings cross I am sure the Piccadilly platforms are clearly marked eastbound and westbound to a PP that mentioned that they aren't always, you want westbound. I'm afraid I can't say you need a train to 'x' destination as westbound Piccadilly trains go to a number of different places, Heathrow terminals, Uxbridge etc but for your purposes so long as you're on the westbound platform any will do, so don't worry about the final destination shown on the board. I think green park is 4 stops from kings cross and Hyde park corner 7.

There are big signs everywhere showing all the stops as well as whole tube maps, on the platform and on the train and every stop is clearly announces as upcoming. Again your DC might enjoy working out your journey, counting the stops etc, you could even pick them up a paper tube map each for free at the station and they can follow along, mine bizarrely used to love calculating the most efficient journeys across London to and from obscure suburbs Confused.

In the middle of the day it shouldn't be too busy on the tube but teach your DC good tube etiquette anyway, stand behind the yellow line, wait for people to leave the tube before getting on, never barge or push, if one train is too full to get on don't panic, there'll be another less than 5 mins behind. People will likely give your DC a seat (ask if none free) but they might prefer to stand, make sure they hold on though! Basic tube safety/rule of thumb in the hugely unlikely possibility of someone getting separated from their party is get off at the next stop and wait there/ find a member of staff to help.

The parks are well signposted from the tube, look for the black and yellow street maps while out and about too.

On the way back you want an eastbound train which will all go to cockfosters. Citymapper is a great app so I'd get that or google maps also v useful for directions and also searching for cafes, restaurants, toilets, ATMs, anything you might need really!

Good luck and enjoy!

sashagabadon · 25/08/2023 10:15

It’s very hard to get lost on the underground. If you feel you are being pushed along by the flow of people, step out of the flow and stop, check you are going right way. If you do get lost, stop and turn back. Literally no one is looking at you or will care so don’t feel embarrassed. Ask people too. Most are happy to point you in right direction but always check yourself they are right as they might be tourists themselves!
look up, directions often above you.

RoseHarper · 25/08/2023 10:20

Citimapper app, first time in london recently and it made a huge difference, pretty much tells you exactly where to go, which direction, has timer for buses, and "counts down" the stops till you need to get off, same for tube. Works for walking/tube/buses and I think also gives options for taxis,

BaconWaffles · 25/08/2023 10:20

Also worth remembering that in big stations like Kings Cross, there are multiple ways to get everywhere. My mum used to get so stressed when she visited me and would see a sign for the main line station, for example, on an underground platform, with two opposite pointing arrows above it. It would really frustrate her, even when I explained that it meant either direction was fine, there were manydifferent ways upstairs, that yes, I always chose a particular one because I had been there before and knew that it was likely to come out closer to my platform or had less walking or something, but it truly didn't matter. She could get to the same place whichever set of signs she followed. She still never seemed very convinced, but it's true. And you could easily get differences directions from different people you ask, but they can all be right!

Just take your time, follow signs, know that there are lots of ways to the same place, ask staff to help. Try to travel off peak if you can, and just get out of the way at the top or bottom of escalators and gates shrike you look at the map and try to work out where you are. It's much less stressful when you don't feel like you are in the way.

And don't stand on the left on the escalators.

northerngoldilocks · 25/08/2023 10:20

Agree with above. Download city mapper. It tells you where to go, which direction and even which end of the train to get on. It makes life very easy.

Seagullchippy · 25/08/2023 10:25

Yes. I've lived here all my life and I use Citymapper!

The tube station is at Kings Cross station so just follow a sign and ask.

Having said that, I got lost in a (familiar enough) London tube station yesterday! I just asked a member of staff though and he was really helpful. :)

Every tube line is designated as north/south/east/west when you're at the platforms themselves. First you follow the signs to the Piccadilly line. Then when you get there, the platforms will be clearly marked by direction they go. Eg:

I’m getting citymapper app now!

frazzledasarock · 25/08/2023 10:59

Just take your time. Once you get off your train look for the exit sign walk towards that. Usually when you get off the train platform you will see a tube map or signs towards tube lines.

I’d take the Victoria line south bound to green park. Fewer stops.

but absolutely ask the tfl staff. They’re super knowledgeable and really kind folk. I grew up in london and have asked them for help.

you’ll be fine. Just don’t stand slap bang in the middle of the concourse whilst you’re thinking about your next steps.
