Will I be paid for holiday a week into new job?

I start a new job in 4 weeks, go on a pre booked holiday in 5 weeks.

They said it's fine and wanted me to start before the holiday and they'll honour it. However I'm just wondering whether I'll actually be paid because obviously I won't have accrued any holidays. The reason why I'll need to know is because if it's unpaid I will have to cancel it.

DH says to just ask them but I don't want to come across badly before I've even started. I will need to know whether I'm actually going on holiday so that I can know whether to prepare and save spending money etc. In people's experience, does this usually get paid in lieu or something? Or is it more likely that it will be unpaid? Should I just ask?

@AnxiousAnniee

No place I have ever worked - in 40 years of working - would ever pay holiday pay to someone who has been there a week.

Why are they letting you start your job, a week before you're on holiday for a week? Confused Most employers wouldn't do this. They'd start you when you came back!

Do you know when the holiday year runs from and how much leave you get?

Let's say it runs from 1Jan - 31Dec and you start on 1 Sep, you would be entitled to 4/12 of your annual holiday allowance to be taken between your start date and the end of the year. If your allowance is 28 days, you should have just over 9 days to take this year.

iDontBelieveAnyOfYou · 25/08/2023 06:08

At my place you'd be paid, but if you quit a few weeks later then you'd owe it back to us which we would do through a stoppage on your last pay cheque.

I started working for a local authority in a fairly senior role in May, and had the following week prebooked as leave. I had to take it unpaid as I hadn’t accrued the leave yet.

There was a thread on here a few years ago where a person took all her leave early in the financial year, and was really upset and confused when told she would have to repay it when she resigned (during her probationary period I think) very shortly after.

Roselilly36 · 25/08/2023 07:13

I would assume that they will pay you, however should you leave the employer before that amount holiday you have taken has been accrued, any balance owing would be deducted from final pay.

Campervangirl · 25/08/2023 07:21

At my work you don't start accruing annual leave until you've been there 6 months.
I'd say casually "just a quick question, when do I start accruing annual leave, I'm just wondering if I get paid for my holiday as I've only been here a week?"
I don't think that's an unreasonable question and I don't think anyone else would think so either.

RoarRoarBoom · 25/08/2023 07:24

My work you can take it when you want even if you haven’t accrued it yet.

Just means if you leave you owe them pay or days.

I would save profusely so that I could afford the holiday..
I would not assume to be paid.

What is the worst thing that can happen if you save?
If you are not paid - you can look forward to more holidays later on.
If you are paid - you will be finanially elated.

I'm not sure the OP has time to 'save profusely' in the next 4 weeks.

I started a new job in June and had one weeks holiday two weeks after starting. They paid me. I left the job a few weeks later and they deducted what I owed them for holiday pay when they paid me. It worked out ok. I really hated the job

Willmafrockfit · 25/08/2023 08:04

i guess you will find out when you are paid

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/08/2023 09:18

I'd be paid for it - salaried staff, public sector.

We get xx days annual leave/year. You could take it all at once in the first month if you wanted. It's only prorated to days due per month if you leave within the year.

Wineandcrisps28 · 06/12/2023 16:32

Some workplaces,
when you start you get an allocation of annual leave until the end of the holiday year if you leave before the end any annual leave you have taken but not accrued is deducted from your final wage

GMsAWinner · 06/12/2023 16:50

Everywhere is different. I started a new job a week before getting married and honeymoon. That was granted. Unfortunately my DF died while we were on honeymoon, so I needed more time off. I was paid for both.

@Peony654 I know I didn't even think though, I just assumed that it would be paid when they said they'd honour it. It wasn't until tonight at home when I realised that having only been there a week that may not be the case!

I worked 2 shifts in my new job and then had 2 weeks holiday, I got paid and it came out of my yearly holiday allowance, however if I left before I could accumulate enough hours to cover it, I’d have to pay it back
hopefully, this will be the same for you
