US policewomen's hair

Random I know, but watching Manifest recently, and Unforgettable, the main (female) characters have long swishy hair that they wear loose. I always thought that the army and the police required long hair to be worn up so it can't be grabbed so easily in a fight.

Googling tells me I'm broadly right on hair regulations, for the US as well as the UK. Thoughts? Does anyone have any personal experiences to share?

Weird question! Do you have a fetish?

DuesToTheDirt · 24/08/2023 14:14

Er, no! It's just their hair is superswishy... have you seen Unforgettable? Carrie spends a lot of time chasing baddies and I'd have thought her hairstyle inappropriate.

Manifest character was a detective, own clothes own style I think.

I've never seen a female police officer or female soldier in uniform with long loose hair so I would say you are correct. The hair would be the first thing a violent criminal would go for!!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/08/2023 15:07

Ah but maybe it’s so smooth and shiny it simply slips out of the criminal’s grasp.

Some experts are now saying that fiction is, well, fiction.

Have a look at UK female police officers. It always amazes me how many of the have ponytails. Perfect for grabbing.

CountryStore · 24/08/2023 15:11

All the female detectives in line of duty have short or tied up hair. This is the full extent of my knowledge. It's probably same in the US though, for safety reasons

Vitriolinsanity · 24/08/2023 15:13

I'm not sure Manifest is a good example; given it's about time/space isn't it?
Hair notwithstanding pretty far-fetched.

I'm thinking of Athena Grant in 911 is more typical. Cagney and Lacey. More grit, less Barnett Grin

Fairyliz · 24/08/2023 15:15

She’s got lovely hair in Manifest hasn’t she. I have hair envy, mines just frizzy.

PinkFootstool · 24/08/2023 15:16

I always wore mine in a bun as an officer even when I was in CID and not uniformed.

I work around a lot of prison officers and court security / van security officers and the number of women with long ponytails, often down to the waist (seems to be a fashion) makes me furious.

The first time they get into a bundle, that ponytail will be wrapped around the hand of the attacker and used to control them - god forbid it's used to smash their heads off things, but I've seen it all happen and some absolutely horrific injuries to women by the attacker using their long hair against them - partial scalping, knocked unconscious, pinned against walls etc.

So yes whilst it's required in a unformed role, it also needs a manager to properly enforce the uniform rules and few of them do in my experience.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2023 15:19

When we used to watch NCIS and CSI I noticed that the women would have their hair down in the office but then if they went out to a crime scene or to arrest someone, suddenly their hair was up.

Ponderingwindow · 24/08/2023 15:20

I suspect the day to day job of policing is far less intriguing than what we see on tv too. I don’t think they are going for accuracy.

They can release them, leaving the perp holding a ponytail and wearing a confused expression.

LunaNorth · 24/08/2023 15:25

Oh god, I commented without reading the above horrific description of violence.

I’m putting my foot in it a lot today.

I’m going now 😳

CrappyBarbara · 24/08/2023 15:25

Seriously? Next thing you’ll tell me junior doctors don’t spend half of their time having hot sex in the on call room!

gogomoto · 24/08/2023 15:25

Can't speak for the police but in the U.K. armed forces long hair must be tied back though only needs to be bunned for dress uniforms

Uniform standards have slipped.
Back in the day hair was collar length or above, or in a bun. No nail polish and no bright make up.
Now young female officers wear high pony tails, wear full make up and have gaudy false nails. From a H&S perspective not good.

Vitriolinsanity · 24/08/2023 15:36

@Devilsmommy and being able to perform ground breaking surgery in a field they haven't had decades of research and experience in. Based in this I am perfectly placed to perform a kidney transplant.

Agreed the post upthread is appalling, but how lacking in self-preservation. would you need to be to have a waist length ponytail whilst working in a prison?

That's a bloody good point. Surely as a woman working in a prison making yourself as safe as you possibly can be would be the first thing you did before work wouldn't it? Obviously being beautifully trendy trumps tho possiblity of getting attacked🤔

Vitriolinsanity · 24/08/2023 15:42

@ThePoshUns Sargent Esterhaus wouldn't be happy with that!

Health and Safety is a personal responsibility.

Prescottdanni123 · 24/08/2023 15:48

Detective Baez in Blue Bloods didn't wear her hair up when it was long either.
