What's your idea of a good day out?

No judgement allowed. The lavender thread made me wonder what others consider t be a good day out.

Personally I'd love to visit a lavender farm. I'm not very exciting and at my happiest when pottering around a town or city with a museum, Cathedral or stately home a nice deli, some interesting shops and ideally several book shops or charity shops that sell books. A good cafe or restaurant is a must. Bonus points if there's lots of cute dogs or some wildlife/farm animals for me to admire. Extra bonus points for interesting architecture.

Happy children with no bickering

simple as that!

Go to the seaside. Walk on the pier. Take lots of photos. Eat fish and chips. Walk on the beach. Go swimming or paddling. Check out all the gift shops. Have a couple of rides at the fairground. Eat ice cream. Take more photos. Go to the sort of cafe with Formica tables and plastic tomatoes and drink tea. Walk around some more.

Fully stocked car and off to the beach for a picnic and building sandcastles, swimming etc with my family. Bonus if other friends with kids are there - the more the merrier! Also, preferably not hotter than 25 and a few clouds..

or if without kids, city break somewhere interesting with hotel, exploring, eating, drinking, shopping! Just quality time really :)

Climb a manageable mountain with beautiful views in good conditions with friends and go to a pub with excellent trad music and a fire afterwards.

Or seeing as much art as humanly possible in a major city alone, followed by a wonderful dinner with friends or an opera.

Or a solo day combining writing (one of those days when it goes well) with walking on my favourite beach and a drink watching the sun set.

Or a silly unplanned day where I meet friends for brunch on a weekday (we all work flexibly at certain times of year), and then all say ‘Let’s keep going’, then go to the pub for the afternoon, ending up with a picnic in someone’s garden.

Or a walk/drive around somewhere in the English countryside (no longer live there), pottering around interesting churches, preferably with wall-paintings, followed by a gastro pub meal.

The plastic tomatoes are key! You’ve made me remember exactly that kind of cafe from my childhood.

There is a lavender farm quite near me - I keep meaning to go and not quite managing it.

Beezknees · 24/08/2023 11:40

Bottomless brunch. Afternoon at a spa. Cocktails and dancing the night away with friends.

My DS is older so idyllic family days out are long gone and I'm sociable and love a party.

shumway · 24/08/2023 11:48

OP I think mine would be the same as yours.

Caspianberg · 24/08/2023 11:49

Nice walk with some decent food halfway

Catsmere · 24/08/2023 13:57

Your day out sounds lovely, OP!

For me actual days out I enjoy are at my knitting group - chatting about all sorts of things, admiring everyone's projects, having lunch at a nearby cafe and then starting over with the afternoon group. If I was in Britain I could probably name going to cathedrals, museums, historic houses and the like as well, but in this regional city in Australia there's nothing like that.

Lahd · 24/08/2023 15:46

With the dc - theme park or seaside. Nice train journey with table seats, and going through an activity book or playing with toys. Mild weather, sunny with a little cloud. Buggy loaded with picnic, splash clothes

PresentPrincess1 · 25/08/2023 19:28

I like farms, museums and theatre trips.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 25/08/2023 19:31

Trip to Central London. Five Guys and a theatre show. Pootle around Harrods or Hamleys.

MrsCharlieD · 25/08/2023 20:01

If it's with the kids then a theme park. We all absolutely love them, are Merlin pass holders and are probably what you'd consider theme park enthusiasts. For reference I'm currently watching the progress of Nemesis being retracked at Alton towers with anticipation.

Otherwise, I enjoy a day in the city, coffee shop mid morning, lunch somewhere nice, preferably with wine, some luxury shopping and then for a takeaway.

U2HasTheEdge · 25/08/2023 20:06

Sitting in the sun, reading a book and having a drink- alcoholic or non-alcoholic. It could be a pub garden, park, anywhere really. Give me the sun and a book and I will be happy.

Good food is a big plus, though.

In the evening? wine and singing!

Sounds great to me, though I probably wouldn't do so many photos! Cafe also has to have those sugar dispensers that have a metal tube down the middle and measure out a spoonful (sort of) at a time! 😊

Basically this.

I don't need the funfair, or even particularly the gift shops.
I'd add in sitting on the beach, a bit of reading and a bit of people watching. Some sandcastles. I might pop into the arcade and lose some 2ps.
