Hi,

I've been an idiot. I have created a huge problem of fruit flies by putting left over fruit in my compost bin in compostable bags from waitrose, but I have realised that they aren't compostable, they have magnified the problem in my kitchen and it has magnified the problem in my kitchen. Of course waitrose, compostable bin bags aren't compostable, they just say that they are! Grrrrrrrr

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea haha. Please make a tikTok. I don't buy honey and cider vinegar is cheap for me so I bought that.

@disluznews

Does the detergent go in the Apple cider vinegar?

Yes. You only need a bit of the apple cider vinegar and a tiny drip of washing up liquid to break the surface tension. I replace every few days so I can keep an eye on number of flies.

You need a roll of sticky fly paper, hung above your kitchen caddy. It is gross but it works.

This never worked for me

My theory is that the downside to the Peat free compost is the flies. I'm convinced I have more in my plants, so more in general. I put all sorts of fruit veg waste on my compost heap outside and I'm never aware of flies on it at all (no bags) but am acutely aware of the flies on my house plants!

That's a really good point, some compost goes mouldy very quickly. Our council recycling chip all kind of diseased crap from garden collections, wet, mouldy, diseased and flog it as compost

Apple cider vinegar in a pot/cup, tiny bit of washing up liquid (not fairy) mixed in, put in close proximity to problem. Voila! Fruit flies caught.
Spider in corner of kitchen window for bog standard flies.
Cellar spiders in ceiling corners for ginormous house spiders.
Fly spray for geometric flies that dance around light bulbs.
No idea about fungus flies, don't have plants because cat.
