Music theory - help!

OnionBhajis · 23/08/2023 15:12

So can anyone who has done the online theory exam explain things to me as if I'm about 5.

My daughter has been revising for her theory exam and I am not musical at all. However she's been working through the past papers and I think can pass.

My "help!" Moment is the online exam itself.

I've read the requirements but you can't download the software until the exam and I'm worried about stuffing up the technical side.

What do they actually do once you click start?
It says you can do the 360 on your phone but how would you link that?

Can I just lift the laptop up and turn it round the room slowly? How would I know if it has seen everything correctly (do I get a "view" thing like in teams of what I'm broadcasting?)

Also is it okay for me to be there until its set up?

Do I then disappear?

Do you come back at the end for ripping up paper etc? Is that all okay? Does she just call me and I come into view?

I am anxious by nature but can not get my head round this amd can't afford to lose 51 quid because of my error!

Help!

Thankyou :)

Has anyone done this?

I think the idea is that they are there alone without any crib items in the room. My DD managed to do it all herself, so it must be reasonably straight forward. How old is your DD?

OnionBhajis · 23/08/2023 18:02

Ah I wonder if I'm overthinking it. From reading the list it looked really complicated and I didnt want to lose the money on the exam!

It states about seeing the whole room (fair enough) but is it okay just to pick the laptop up to do that?

My daughter is autistic and will also get anxious if she thinks she's not got it right.

I got the impression I'd start her off and help with the 360 thing.

(In the list it says you can use a phone- which makes sense only you can't do the exam on the phone so how would you upload that?)

I really need someone whose done it to talk through what to expect!

My DD just lifted the laptop up and showed it round the room. She found the app very useful for revision

It’s fairly straightforward once you’re logged in to the system. You can do the room
scan by lifting the laptop and filming the room (ceilings, floor, walls, desk area). You can be in the room to help with that. Depending on how old your child is, they should be able to sort it out themselves thereafter, including tearing up the paper at the end.

Assuming it’s ABRSM, make sure you read their guidance. https://gb.abrsm.org/en/our-exams/online-theory/

Results take exactly 28 days.

Hi, I helped my ds do the initial tasks and then left the room. He did the final bit

it does take you through it, i was really stressed that i would bugger it up on the admin but it was ok in the end

we just moved the laptop around so it showed on it’s camera

remember to show it the blank paper for workings out (both sides)- which you then show being torn at the end

Another76543 · 23/08/2023 18:11

There’s a systems check to ensure your computer is compatible. Not all are. For example, I seem to remember it won’t work with chromebooks.

OnionBhajis · 23/08/2023 18:14

Ah yes it's reading all the abrsm stuff that's got me a bit anxious!

Thanks everyone. Yes that's fab I'd I can be there and help her to do the initial stuff.

Then just warn her about tearing up paper at the end.

I think the info makes it sound worse than it is. One of mine realised they’d forgotten to tear up the paper at the end on the first online theory exam they did, but thankfully all was ok and it didn’t get queried. Thankfully they didn’t make the same mistake again!

I've done it with my child. You can do the scan by lifting the laptop and moving it around. I do this, and show my childs id and blank paper etc. I then sit in the room (think you're meant to stay in the room if you have a young child). Once theyre done, i make sure they rip up their note paper. Can't remember all the regs but the guidance is clear, would recommend reading through a couple of times beforehand.

Abrsm have a walk through on their YouTube page. It shows you exactly what to do. I just moved my laptop camera around, it was fine. It's much easier thsn you think

OnionBhajis · 23/08/2023 18:47

Ah didnt know about the walk through. That will be perfect!

Really didn't think I could be in the room?! I could be signing to her (not that it would help. I know nothing!)
