Learning to swim as an adult

Im turning 37 this year and never learnt to swim as a child. Parents never bothered I would just float in the pool and that's about it. Is there any hope for me to learn to swim as an absolute beginner?
There are adult classes happening in my local gym and they all look relatively young and I can't bring myself to join.

I am in the same position as you and the same age too. I have been pondering joining adult lessons for a few years now and feel like maybe this autumn/winter is the time to finally take the plunge (ha literally!)
I really regret not being able to go for a swim on holiday and would love to be able to go further into the sea rather than just standing in it.

My children are still quite small but when DH and I chat about future holidays, activities like stand up paddle boarding etc come up and I really don’t want it just to be daddy joining in with the adventures and mummy always sitting at the side watching them all have fun. That’s a big motivator for me.

I could swim but not very well so joined beginners swimming lessons at my local gym. I really enjoyed the lessons. l’m mid forties.
Go for it!

Go for it! There are lots of adult learners.I’ll give you three reasons but I am sure there are more.

  1. valuable life skill (what would happen if you or your child fell into water?)
  2. so many more options will be available/feel more comfortable to you (water sports holiday, learn to scuba dive or surf, swim with your kids, just swim in the pool on your next holiday)
  3. fitness - learning to swim will improve your fitness, and actually swimming once you have learned is a great way to burn calories, switch your mind off, and relax

have fun!

I had swimming lessons in my early 30s for about 18 months. I went from being completely terrified to maybe half a length in the pool but I still hate being in water above my chest height. I don't think I'll ever be able to get over that fear honestly.

I learnt at 40! I was taught by DDs friends DM. I learnt In 3 weeks.
