My son hears voices

My son says he hears a voice in his head. It's not voices telling him to do stuff or anything like that. But its like his thoughts have a voice. I think I have heard of this before but not sure if I imagined it. Is there a name for this ?

I’m surprised by people minimising this. Support him to talk to the GP. Even / especially if he is or could be autistic - there is a higher incidence of schizophrenia among the autistic population.

Are the internal voices new? At his age a sudden change could be a worry that is worth investigating.

It's also a good idea to investigate if they are causing him concerns or issues.

If it is just how he has always thought and he is not worried then he probably just thinks in a very different way to you.

Thornrose · 23/08/2023 12:37

I think the key is whether the thoughts/voices are causing distress or upset. Whether there is a controlling or negative aspect. Do they take over or affect day to day life.

My dd has autism and developed psychosis like symptoms as a young adult. It was a very frightening time.

I think on reflection I normalised it for too long which I now regret.

There's a difference between hearing voices out loud in your head such as auditory hallucinations and just being aware of your thoughts as a sort of inner thinking process/ dialogue which you are thinking but. It saying out loud if that makes sense.
Auditory hallucinations are usually pathological or need assessment at least - so a voice, even if it's his own, speaking to him in a way that he experiences out loud , rather than just having thoughts/ conversations in his head.

Thinking but not saying out loud

If he's hearing voices not just aware of thoughts, he needs to see the Dr for an assessment and possible psych referral

I think some posters are overly dramatic- inner voices are common. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/oct/25/the-last-great-mystery-of-the-mind-meet-the-people-who-have-unusual-or-non-existent-inner-voices?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Sadly, I don’t have an inner voice and don’t see pictures when I think

How many people do you know refer to themselves as 'hearing voices' when they mean an internal monologue? There's a major difference

Beamur · 23/08/2023 12:58

If it's a change from what's 'normal'for him I would seek proper GP advice

MushMonster · 23/08/2023 12:58

OP states: "is like his thoughts have a voice"
Now, if it is new, yes check it up.
But, otherwise, how is this concerning?

To PP who do not have a voice for their thoughts, how do you think? Written words? How does it go? I am so so so curious!

pamplemoussemousse · 23/08/2023 13:01

If it's a new thing I'd definitely encourage him to see a dr, just in case.

If it's not and it's just his internal monologue then he's just like most people.

DH doesn't have one at all, I can't comprehend just having an empty head 🤣

XlemonX · 23/08/2023 13:16

agree with post above. Age to develope schizophenia.. could be psychosis. Its called auditory hallucination.
Keep a close eye on him and spot signs of paranoia or responding to voices…

Duchessofspace · 23/08/2023 13:20

I have an internal dialogue umm right what do you think about this or that’s worrying what are the possible causes etc

My daughter hears voices giving instructions eg discuss this with mum as it is worrying you - but this is her autism

stayclosetoyourself · 23/08/2023 14:07

I have multiple inner conversations, but they are silent not out loud.

MushMonster · 23/08/2023 17:14

Imagine complete silence!
I cannot really fanthom it 😀

booksandbrooks · 23/08/2023 23:07

Just in case it's a sign of something more serious, the hearing voices network sound amazing. I researched them for a friend so no direct experience.
