Braces: dentist or orthodontist?

DD2 (very nearly 13) has been referred by our NHS dentist for braces. I was surprised to be referred to a private dentist in our small town. She has recently got an NHS orthodontic contract.

At DD2s initial assessment with the private dentist, she said she may not be able to treat DD2, as she can only take on simple cases. The potential complexity was something to do with the jaw. She asked to see DD2 again in six months.

I asked what would happen six months down the line if private dentist could not treat DD2. She said that DD2 would have to go to a specialist practice (one of the Queensway branches in NE England).

The six months is now up. Local private dentist has said she can treat DD2. My question is whether we go with the local, non-specialist option, or whether we wait 2 years plus for the Queensway option.

DD1(15) is currently with Queensway for her braces. It's 1 1/2 hour round trip, for which I have to take her. I'm impressed with the service so far. I would happily choose it again for DD2, but the option of a much closer practice with NO WAITING LIST is extremely tempting!!

I know very little about dentistry and orthodontics. The private dentist's comment about only taking on simple cases has made me question if she is a "safe" choice. Is there any reason I should be worried about DD2 having orthodontic treatment with a non-specialist? Would she get a better result at the specialist practice? Or am I worrying about nothing?

At least she knows her limitations and works within those, she’s a sensible practitioner

Thanks @Littlemissprosecco. I agree.

It’s hard to give any advice without knowing any of the clinical details, but orthodontists are renowned perfectionists and I doubt she would agree to take on your daughter if she didn’t think she could get good results
