Wisdom tooth out under local/living alone - how to prepare? (Gross photo, sorry)

I’m getting my wisdom tooth out next week, thankfully my last one. It’s mostly out of the gum but it’s in a mess - there’s an enormous hole in it. Lower right side. I haven’t got anyone to go with me or take me home, so a bit worried.

I was sexually assaulted a few years ago by a HCP - my dentist is aware and very supportive. She said ideally I’d have been knocked out or at least sedated but I can’t have IV sedation due to prior bad reactions, and can’t have a GA either, as nowhere to stay afterwards. So it’s going to have to be done pretty much wide awake - although I have got diazepam I can take.

They did say they’ll make sure they prescribe proper analgesia for after.

I’ve had teeth out before - all my other wisdom teeth, although one was done in hospital, the other two were done in dentist - all needed stitches afterwards - but always had someone at home, this is a bit more of a thought and I’m not sure I want to go through with it - if it wasn’t that the tooth is such a bloody mess I’d cancel it.

So far I’m thinking I should make sure I’ve got pain relief, ice lollies/ice cream and spare gauze in the house… and soft food that I can eat easily without needing to cook so custard and jelly and stuff? Is there anything else I’m worth getting? Thought about arnica.

If you take diazepam, how are you going to get home?

I'm really sorry that you were sexually abused x

I was a dental nurse for an oral surgeon. You'll be fine honestly. Lots of soft foods like pasta, can get some milkshakes Im too! Nothing that can get stuck in the hole like rice.

Sounds like you've got it all covered though! Good luck xx

Had one pulled under local, couple of minutes done. Keep some gauze on it for a bit and keep it clean. They will tell you how to look after it.
I didn't have stiches still feels a bit weird months late but rather that than pain( mine was wisdom that was dropping as nothing underneath it. )
It didn't hurt and was very fast, just tried not to chew that side for a few days but didn't need anything special.

Sorry you’re worried about this, but it will be a relief when it’s gone.

Why are you not able to have anyone at home this time, when you did have someone for the others?

For soft food, I wouldn’t only have sweet things. What about ready-made soup, daal, hummus, tzatziki, soft cheese?

I’ve had an extraction recently and f me it messed me up. It took over a week to get my energy levels back. All the Angel delight, I also found mash with sausages cooked in onion gravy was a nice soft meal when I needed savoury. I used cocodamol for about 4 days (not all doses were cocodamol) before going to paracetamol. I slept so much that week too.

Sounds like you’ve thought it all through. Make sure your devices are charged and chargers handy so you can distract yourself with social media/box sets/ podcasts etc.
I had a huge molar out a few months ago and it was a surprisingly fine recovery ( having had previous extractions) so try and think positive thoughts ( not easy, I know. I nearly ran away as I sat in the dentist’s waiting room waiting for my appointment)
And I went on my own so drove myself home afterwards, after sitting for 10 minutes in the waiting room to make sure I was ok.

Good luck x

Thank you - getting a taxi home, dentist is only 5 mins in a taxi so will be able to get straight home and into bed. I’ve got a fair few meetings for the next few days after. I live alone - previously I’d have stayed with family but that’s not an option just now. I’ll be relieved to get it over and done with definitely.

The last one I had out, I had my covid vaccination the day after and then started a period so I’m hoping this time won’t be so bad as that week was!

I think you'll be fine. Just avoid straws!

ChaToilLeam · 25/08/2023 18:45

I’ve had two wisdom teeth out, dentist recommended soft food like soup, yoghurt, custard, mashed potato etc. Also ibuprofen for the pain. But really, after the anaesthetic wore off, the pain was minimal. I was a bit wiped out for the rest of the day but after that fine. I hope you will be too.

EnthENd · 25/08/2023 18:50

Sounds like you have most things sorted. I had a tooth out earlier this week and one out a few months ago (I have terrible teeth), although not wisdom teeth.

If the local anaesthetic is done right you won't feel any pain during the extraction, so stop your dentist if you do. They can use more LA and if that still doesn't work they should leave it and call you back for another visit - I had that with the one a few months back, the first time it just wouldn't numb up, second try a week later was fine.

Sore afterwards once the LA wears off. Don't go straight to bed! You want to take it easy for the rest of the day but be sitting or standing up - elevate the wound and all that.

hi op. i'm a dentist and from the picture it does look like a relatively straightforward extraction. Obviously you can never predict or guarantee anything but i am sure you will be fine, you are doing all the right things and the diazepam should be really helpful. having pain relief and soft foods etc are ideal. it may even go better than you think and you recover very quickly. all the best!
