Do you remember going to the cinema in the 70s?

Dh and I have been trying to describe what going to the cinema was like when we were kids to our kids. Another universe, really!

Do you remember the screen showing a kaleidoscope of ice-creams at the end of the B-feature? I've been trying to find a video of it, but clearly not using the right search terms. Or maybe I imagine it?

There used to be a huge queue which went right around the corner, that’s what I remember the most about the first time I went when I was about 3. Queuing to get in on a sunny day with my teenage sister.

My parents never took me, I always went with older cousins or my sister. Saying that, it wasn’t a regular event and I can only think of five films that I saw before I hit my teens and started going with friends (live action Alice In Wonderland, The Slipper and The Rose, Pete’s Dragon, Benji, and Grease).

I remember boxes of Fruit Gums, and there was a short film before the main one. Seem to remember it was sometimes a documentary.

My kids don’t believe me that our cinema had ONE screen and showed the same film for a week. If it was a big blockbuster it would be on for a few weeks. We’d eagerly scan the local free paper each week to see if there was a new film on.

My mum used to take us to the 'Saturday Morning Pictures' in the 1970's. The cinema would be full of families with young children. And I remember they would show cowboy films. I think I was quite young, then but it's a nice memory.

I remember you had to queue in the rain and the cold with no guarantee that you'd actually get in...for all those with rose tinted specs!

We had the Granada and the Ruby when I was growing up in the 60's, 70's

The Granada was so opulent with its sweeping staircase and foyer . Very art deco

Pearl and Dean adverts for the local curry house ( didn't know anyone who had ever had an Indian curry )

The usherettes with their torches showing you to your seat and the selling of ice cream in the interval . Not that we could afford that, we got 1/4 oz of sweets before we went

Never liked the Ruby , a lot smaller and it never smelled clean, but it was cheaper. Last time I went to it was to see Grease. Queued up all day from 10am to 7pm to see it , the queue was miles long and everyone was moaning that it wasnt being shown at the Granada

But going to the pictures was a right treat. Back then films video hadn't made an appearance and it would take years before the tv companies bought the rights to show so if you wanted to see a film, you usually had a two week period in which to watch it. And because of that, people - kids as well - sat in silence and watched it

I remember in cinemas and theatres you could get the boxes of pastilles and fruit gums etc, not just the tubes like elsewhere. Also, little Walls Cornish ice creams with wooden spoon things.

And the fruit gums were the shape of the actual fruit, and much more chewy and tangy than they are now. I miss proper fruit gums.

Our local cinema allowed both smoking and drinking in the seats. It had a "proper" pub where you could get pints etc. I think they were in plastic glasses but they could well have been glass.
