Help please as I don't know where else to ask! My kids school is advertising an admin job. It's 27.5 hours per week, 39 weeks per year and the payable is Grade 2, Point 4. I've not worked on a school before, so no idea how to decipher this - can anyone shed any light on it for me?

Does it say how many days a week? I did 8-3:30 until I changed my hours. No harm in asking to clarify.

Is it primary or secondary?

I work admin in a high school, it's quite an easy job, lot of letters and printing, Mail merge etc

OK. Taking Plymouth as the first council pay scales I could find (all council should follow the same pay scales)
FTE would be 21189
https://www.plymouth.gov.uk/pay-and-grading-structure-2023-2024

Scale 44/52 to allow for teem time working (39 weeks plus 5 paid leave) gets you to 17929.

Scale 27.5/37 to slow for reduced hours gets to 13325.

So, my guess is salary would be in the order od £13,325

stupid calls by parents “us little billy wearing his hat today , as its cold outside “.

shit pay, seriously shit. Best thing i did was pack it in.

It will be very marginally above minimum wage and you'll get paid for about 45 weeks of the year.

I loved school admin. It was very busy so time went quickly. It was varied and i had loads of autonomy. The kids were great.

The downside was being paid for 45 weeks of the year and then part time. It meant the take home pay was not enough to live on.

Look up the LA area to get an idea of the FTE pay for the grade then we can help with the maths

As PP have mentioned you need to find the pay grades, if you have those I can give you a good idea of your take home. The school year is 38 weeks for us so a 39 week contract for us is a standard term time plus one week which is the inset days so for example if you worked 4 days a week you would be expected to work 4 of the 5 insets.

I work in secondary school finance, the job is not easy, it's really hard work for very little money, however it can be rewarding.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It's given me a lot to think about. I think the draw of it is a better work life-balance, but by the sound of things we're not going to be able to afford the monthly bills based on that salary - I knew it wouldn't be much but gosh it's low. Shout out to all the amazing school admins out there!
