Would you take your child to a&e

For a stomach bug that has lasted 7 days not getting any better. I presume he caught it on the ferry.

DS age 10 has been writhing around in stomach pain daily.
He has been having very loose stools about 5-10 times a day, no vomiting.
We can't get a GP appointment for another few days.
I'm really worried, he's only eating small amounts and he's become anxious to eat anything.
He's drinking water and some vitamin water. He's lost a lot of weight and he's skinny already. He's a bit lacklustre and doesn't want to do much.
He has had no temperature.

A&e or wait to see GP?

Yes. It might be appendicitis, and it could go septic. Definitely.

calmcoco · 21/08/2023 13:57

I'd ring 111 and ask for an urgent gp appointment and if that was not soon/available then yes I'd get him checked.

Sssudio · 21/08/2023 13:58

What do 111 say?

Yes 111 and get an emergency appointment.

JC89 · 21/08/2023 13:59

I would call 111 and see what they say (a&e waiting times are very off-putting!) But if 111 suggests you go then go.

LennyBalls · 21/08/2023 14:02

Yes. My son had a stomach bug. I took him to A&E. He had become dangerously dehydrated and had to have two rehydration drips.

Problesolving · 21/08/2023 14:09

When you rang first thing this morning and ask for emergency GP appointment what did they say? If you can’t get an emergency GP appointment then ring 111.

BettyCake · 21/08/2023 14:14

Thanks I'm ringing 111 now

Have rung the surgery again and they are going to call us back.

No. Urgent appointment with GP or call 111.

Mariposista · 21/08/2023 14:30

Poor lad. Definitely get this sorted today, one way or another.

Soverymuchfruit · 21/08/2023 14:53

Rehydration salts (mixed in water, you get them from the pharmacy). Hope 111 can sort you out with an urgent GP appointment, they've done well for us.

HTmmm · 21/08/2023 14:55

I'd be giving pre and probiotics and calling 111.

BettyCake · 21/08/2023 14:58

Thanks everyone. We have now been given an urgent GP appointment in an hour. Phew.

PinkButtercups · 21/08/2023 15:01

Bless him. Hope you get some answers soon!

PhantomUnicorn · 21/08/2023 15:02

not sure what he is eating, but one tip for stomach bugs, don't give them dairy for a week or so.

sometimes gastro issues can cause temp lactose intolerance which can prolong symptoms.

I hope drs can get to the cause of it and help him feel better!

Youdontsay87 · 21/08/2023 15:09

Yes I would have given them dioralyte days ago and seen a doctor on day 4.

BettyCake · 21/08/2023 15:12

We have been giving rehydration salts. We kept thinking he would get better by the next day but it's gone on for so long now.

OP posts:
Merapi · 21/08/2023 15:24

It has gone on too long really. They should probably take a sample to rule out anything horrid like salmonella.

Whereisthesun2023 · 21/08/2023 15:39

No, I would phone 111 and follow their advice.

picturethispatsy · 21/08/2023 16:30

I second the advice to avoid dairy at all costs (learnt this from personal experience 😬) until the gut is fully healed and the loose stools have ceased. Then reintroduce very slowly. Good luck
