Does this minor (hopefully) but gross injury need to be seen? Pic included

DS has injured his hand playing his sport. I don't know if you can see properly but the nail is bent right back at a kind of right angle but is still very much attached. It bled from behind the nail a bit but stopped pretty quickly. He had an ice-pack, I've put nurofen gel on and he's had paracetamol but says it's still painful. I'm wondering whether we should go to a walk-in centre tomorrow or not? If not, should I be trying to remove the bent bit of the nail? I'm useless at this stuff so any advice would be lovely.

Ouchy. I'd pop to MI.

The bend could be putting quite a bit of pressure on the nail bed there, so I'd see if they would remove it from slightly below, which you wouldn't be able to do. If there's further swelling/bleeding, that can also cause a pressure build up right at that point over the next couple of days, so I'd want to get it released sooner, rather than later.

I would say yes. Many years ago my dm had something similar and they had to remove the nail. Also worth remembering you nail bed is very prone to infection if exposed so he might need it washing and maybe antibiotics as a pre caution. All was well after with my dm. No lasting damage what so ever.

Omg that has made me cringe !! I would get that looked at, the nail isn't going to right itself bent so far back I don't think

I would go , if only to see if they can get rid of the nail . Do you have a finger dressing , if not get some as that will need protection and a plaster will be a nightmare to keep on .

Thanks all - sounds like we'll be off to the walk-in tomorrow. Typical for it to be the day the car is being serviced! Poor ds - nothing seems to be bringing the pain down.

I bent a nail back like that on myself and was able to push it back into place. It's not actually difficult and relieved a lot of the pain. I'd try it before going to MI.
(just put something over the nail - some tissue or something - and press the nail down in the direction that it should be going. It won't go immediately but shouldn't hurt massively if you apply fairly gentle but steady and sustained pressure. Ice first is a good idea to get any swelling down - I see you've already iced it). Then a plaster or something around the nail.Within a few days it will have grown enough to be able to cut without going down to the nail bed.
