What life admin / 'sort my life out' jobs should I do this fortnight?

thelittlestbird · 20/08/2023 18:37

I'm on the precipice of two whole weeks of annual leave with no arrangements and no childcare commitments Grin

It's my first stretch of leave from work in a few years where I've not had anything tying me to a schedule.

I want to use it to sort my life / s€$t out before autumn starts. 2023 has kicked my ass with bereavements and debt and other big horrible things so I want to be in a good headspace to see out the year.

What would you do with the time? Hoping for inspiration!

So far on my list I have:

  • list all too small baby clothes in bundles on vinted
  • Get the winter coats dry cleaned
  • get winter clothes down from loft
  • audit of freezer
  • audit of pantry foods
  • paint a few rooms around the house
  • general declutter

Plan social activities, family visits, days out and holidays for the coming months.

Book tickets to upcoming cultural events or entertainment.

Tadpolle · 20/08/2023 23:31

It would be great to do some fun/ hobby/ cultural stuff for yourself too.
E.g. get through a tv box set series you've been meaning to watch, listen to audiobooks of classics you've never read while walking for exercise, brush up a language on a language learning daily app.

TragicTess · 20/08/2023 23:46

Love this - have a week off & plan to do:
Dr/dentist appointments
Car insurance
Blackberry picking for freezer
Larder/freezer audits
Coffee (maybe with DH Smile)
Taxi service for DD (& enjoy it as last year before Uni)
Paint en-suite
Floor quote
Maybe wills
Passport renew for DC
Read (trying for 50 only on 28...)

Will not spend all the time thinking about & adding to this list but not actually achieving anything on it...

uncomfortablydumb53 · 20/08/2023 23:52

Worm any pets
List your clothes on Vinted when you've sorted them
Wash throws curtains for winter
Go through lnsurances/ broadband and note renewal date's somewhere

mum2jakie · 21/08/2023 11:37

Don't forget to put time aside for nice/social activities too so you feel like you've actually had a decent break and not just swapped one kind of work for another!

I've got a week off and will be visiting my dad today as haven't managed to see him for a while. I then have a plan to tackle the kitchen cupboards and use that as a basis for meal planning for the week so I'm not wasting valuable holiday time doing unnecessary food shopping.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 21/08/2023 11:40

Great ideas but I am going to add - pick a few hours and go out and treat yourself in the middle of your life laundry fortnight

mum2jakie · 22/08/2023 21:02

How are you getting on @thelittlestbird ?

I have made small but useful steps so far this week. Made a claim on an insurance policy and cancelled renewal. Small bag of old clothes to the clothes bank and sorted old school uniform to take to the school uniform bank tomorrow.

Have prepared the oven base with Oven Pride tonight so tomorrow's task will be to clean the oven.

I find it helpful to set small achievable tasks for each day and then I can see what I've got done each day.

Sounds like a productive start to your week! How did you get on with the oven? Our second oven's filament has gone so I really need to get that sorted...

Otherwise been good here. I've sold the vast majority of DD's old clothes on vinted, ordered a few months worth of supplements so I'm stocked up and bought some extra storage for the bathroom. I've also done some long runs / hikes with DH so spent time in nature. Feeling good!

Well done op👍 My oven clean wasn't perfect - despite leaving it overnight!

Enjoy your second week off and hope it is both productive and enjoyable!

frozendaisy · 27/08/2023 20:11

Paint a few rooms.
That's 2 weeks just there.

Tadpolle · 28/08/2023 14:29

I think I will join you when the kids go back. I've started a great list in my diary with ideas from this thread. Thanks OP!

thelittlestbird · 29/08/2023 06:41

Another thing I want to do is-

  • note all the weekly / monthly / quarterly etc jobs down in my calendar for next year.

Forewarned is forearmed etc...

SoSad44 · 29/08/2023 06:46

i am excited for you. I only have two days to do something similar and will mainly focus on me (optician, hairdresser, tidy home office, my wardrobe)

Check car: overdue MOT or service (I was overdue by 3 months!)

due smear test? Or dentist check-up

sort through photos on phones and ipad, order or make albums

any old tech that needs recycling, tablets, broken toys etc

charity shop run with clear out of toys, etc

Lonicerax · 29/08/2023 06:49

Paint a few rooms is too vague -you could spend 2days choosing colours …..
do the one that really needs done -or just wipe down doors and touch up chips and scuffs. Get paint and brush out the night before.

An hour a day in the garden -good for the mind too.
Get black bin bags, cleaning cloths etc so you are ready to goooo…

SoSad44 · 29/08/2023 06:50

Book tickets is a good one. I have already booked
-panto tickets
-christmas lights at a NT (weekends nearly sold out)
-easter flights to see family
-London trip with kids
-comedian at local theatre
-concert tickets for DH (xmas present)

need to book flight to see a sick relative.

AuroraForever · 29/08/2023 07:01

Spend some time sorting out old online accounts, logins and social media: changing passwords, closing ones you don’t use anymore, clearing out personal data etc.

Veracity23 · 29/08/2023 07:47

Tidy up/delete digital photos and digital files.....
Check passports, insurance etc

BarbaraofSeville · 29/08/2023 08:03

God, this sort of stuff could fill a lifetime, I'm way behind on just about all the things mentioned.

I'm coming to the end of a week off, back tomorrow Sad

I've had a half spa day, been out walking every day, watched the first 4 and a half seasons of the Big Bang Theory, taken part in a 'village culture day' type thing and added a million things to my multiple to do lists.

I'm now in the middle of googling 'how to get past overwhelm with to do lists and actually get the important stuff on them done'.

caringcarer · 29/08/2023 09:49

Have you got a computer file in case of death?

On mine I've got where deeds to house are kept and where will is kept plus executors.

Gas and electricity companies and my account numbers. Water company plus account number. Pass words for online accounts.

Bank sort codes and account numbers for savings accounts, ISA's and current accounts. Also the internet pass words for all bank accounts.

Deeds for holiday home, full address and address of place we pay taxes for house and account number of French bank account plus pass pin code.

All accounts numbers for Sky, BT Sport, Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime.

I've got some btl properties so all addresses, who mortgage is with and DD details. Plus ho much rent is due and due date.

What I want for my funeral.

SoSad44 · 29/08/2023 10:46

@caringcarer my MIL had this and it was a life saver. She had it all printed out too, in an easy to find place.

Jennalong · 29/08/2023 18:20

If its not already suggested cull your emails and if not already done set up some folders I.e Gas & Electricity, Water , Phone , Mortgage , Receipts , School info etc. Then put those in the folders , get rid of rest.
