Please explain eBay to me

I am trying to sell some things on eBay but I’m not really sure how it works.

The items aren’t selling. Can I reduce the price during the listing period or do I have to withdraw and relist or wait until the present listing expires?

As long as there are no bids on your item, you can revise anything.

Florence4170 · 20/08/2023 18:10

You can revise your listing up to 24 hours before it ends, I think. Things don't always sell immediately, don't be too hasty! If you have lots of views but no watchers/bids, it might mean that your item is too dear.

You can revise a listing provided there are no bids and more than 12 hours before the listing ends.
Personally I think ebay is a waste of time now. I sell more on Vinted, I was selling a few items a week on ebay a couple of years ago, now I'm lucky if I sell one a month.

Unless it's really unique personal sellers barely stand a chance on eBay now. Look at Vinted depending on what it is

JodyMitchell · 20/08/2023 18:23

Thanks so much for the replies, they are really useful.

I am selling some paintings that belonged to my grandparents so Vinted wouldn’t work.

Are the paintings by professional artists?
Not much sells in August, though.

JodyMitchell · 20/08/2023 19:01

@lljkk the paintings are by professional artists from the 1920s, one of them is by a quite well known painter. I have been in touch with several auctioneers including those who specialise in that particular type of painting but was told it wasn’t worth them auctioning them as they aren’t high value as they aren’t in fashion at the moment.

They have been on eBay since July. It’s a good tip that summer is slow and one of the paintings is of countryside which might appeal to someone who has been on holiday there. I will leave it a while and then reduce the price.

An auctioneer has told you there isn't much demand for the paintings.

Plus if you're a new seller, people are wary because scammers sign up with new accounts to sell fake items or steal peoples money. Until you get feedback to say you're honest a lot of people won't buy from you.

Sad to say that you'll struggle to sell the paintings unfortunately.

Pineapplewaves · 20/08/2023 19:57

Why can't you put the paintings on Vinted? There's anything and everything on Vinted....

JodyMitchell · 20/08/2023 21:19

@BarbaraofSeville thanks for your advice. It makes sense. It might be a better idea to get DD to sell them instead as she sells lots on eBay and has positive reviews. I am a first time seller.

@Pineapplewaves i looked at Vinted again after reading your post and you’re right there’s a lot more than clothes, I didn’t realise! There isn’t anything similar to what I’m selling though, I don’t think people would go looking for 1920s watercolour paintings on there.

I think they might, as much as eBay. I bought some China ornaments on Vinted and clearly wasn't the only one buying. (They were tasteful!)
