Car insurance: has anyone else's skyrocketed?

I paid £300 last year.

This year, the cheapest I can find is £520! I've had no accidents and my circumstances haven't changed!

What's going on?

Yep, same situation here. It's ridiculous. Mine are similar figures and even shopping around isn't bringing it down.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 20/08/2023 15:18

Mine went up 20% this year.

geminiflanagan · 20/08/2023 15:19

Yep. Last year I paid £217, this year it was £361. Same company, but still the cheapest after running things through various comparison sites. No changes at all - same car, same address, no claims. Maddening.

EvenlyDetermined · 20/08/2023 15:20

Yes, DH said the same last month, his went up by about £200 despite no changes, couldn't get any better elsewhere but he did managed to haggle his renewal down by £50. My renewal in Feb was a bit higher than last year and again couldn't save anything by shopping around.

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 20/08/2023 15:22

Same here.

The reason why isn't taxing to work out.

It's the knock on effect of the cost of repairs going through the rough due to labour and parts.

Also, insurance company overheads for staff and buildings will have increased.

Floofydawg · 20/08/2023 15:28

Premium inflation due to massively increased repair costs. The insurers are not making a fortune.

HazelHair · 20/08/2023 17:06

Has anyone got any tips for making it cheaper? I can't stretch to £520 Sad

Price comparison site. But you can't misrepresent your details to make it cheaper.

Helpfulperson123 · 20/08/2023 19:36

Didn’t they make penalising loyal customers illegal?

Turns out the lazy people were subsidising those who shopped around…

SophiaElise · 20/08/2023 19:38

Mine was exactly the same - renewed last month.

Are you shopping around or sticking to your previous insurer?

Can you add a parent on? I did this a while ago and it reduced it? But after a while it made it more expensive. Never really worked out why.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/08/2023 19:54

Mine was £116 last year made a claim and is now £142

BlueThursday · 20/08/2023 19:58

Jumped from £600 to £1100 on the renewal quote there

shopped around and got £550

Changed no details whatsoever? Like-for-like cover to previous year?

Yeah just the auto-renewal from admiral

Yes, but the new deal elsewhere? Admiral have been shown to be ripping off, so this makes some sense. Just think a reduction year or year in this climate seems unlikely?

BlueThursday · 20/08/2023 20:21

The new deal is exactly the same details, such a pain to have to go look around but no chance I want to be paying >£500 more than necessary

bumblefeline · 20/08/2023 20:22

Yep DH's and MIL both jumped up loads. Dreading to see what my 21 year old comes back at next month.

HazelHair · 20/08/2023 20:28

Those with cheaper quotes, what company are you using?

OP posts:
fiorentina · 20/08/2023 20:31

Ours has jumped hugely, according to the broker this was due to increasing thefts in our area. V frustrating. We got it down slightly but not significantly.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/08/2023 20:31

I found this, I had to shop around and haven't got all of the extra add ons.

It's still £100 more than last year 😕

I went with AA in the end.

TicTacNicNak · 20/08/2023 20:35

My renewal with Direct Line didn't change much this year but my 24yo DD's went up from £650 to over £900 - also with Direct Line. I called them and they just muttered about general increases, cost of living etc. Told them to take it off auto renewal and shopped around using Compare the Market. Got a new policy with Aviva for £718.

voxnihili · 20/08/2023 20:39

Might went from £500 ish to £800 ish. Did an online quote on price comparison and got like for like for £600 ish. Phoned my insurance company to cancel who managed to reduce it to the £600 ish price within about 30 seconds.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 20/08/2023 21:08

I was with Admiral and paying £298. Just had quote for this year, £560! Got it down to £340 using Money Supermarket.
