Sorry if this is a stupid question or offends anyone . But I was just wondering. Do children and teenagers actually enjoy family days out at places like stately Gardens ,markets and museums. It just shouts boring to me . Maybe I'm just a dick.

I loved farms, anything to do with animals 😁

Invisimamma · 20/08/2023 18:45

Mine were okay with the sort of thing when they were little, say under 7. Now at 9 and 13 they'd much prefer mini-golf, cinema, trampolining, climbing or paddle boarding.

I wanted my thread to be pages of yes the kids would be extremely bored etc . But it wasn't 🤣

But you think your kids would find it boring because you do.

Which is fine, but obviously everyone doesn’t or they wouldn’t exist..

My kids have ADHD and they enjoy going anywhere. We do a lot of city breaks and museums, art galleries and libraries are my go-to things to do because they are usually free and interactive, have children's areas, arts and crafts, trails etc We spent 3 hours in an art gallery yesterday. Now I don't personally like stately homes, so we don't tend to do them often but we do Botanic Gardens a lot and they always enjoy them, just as much as they'd enjoy a walk around any park and stately homes always have gardens too. They also like cafes and gift shops of course.

We go a lot and they seem to enjoy them. There’s usually something that sparks their interest. NT is ever more child friendly and houses often do some great family trails that both DC enjoy.

I probably wouldn’t take them to a market - though what type? - as I don’t like crafty stuff. A farmer’s market they’d probably be interested in.

Well of course it wasn't! These places wouldn't be so popular with families if kids found them boring, would they? If they were all just an old house plus a formal garden then yes, lots of kids probably would find them boring. But most of them have other attractions.

We are not a musuem/histoey/ nature family. They get enough of that at school. In our holiday time a market or shopping centre, looking at the various items for sale and then a drink and cake is what the dc enjoy

Nothing wrong with feeding their bodies, shame about not feeding their brains.

My kids wouldn't necessarily whoop with joy but generally enjoy it once there. One of them once made a fuss and complained that if it was "educational" it wasn't fun, then went on to have a great day out!

We don't do museums / castles / stately homes that often as they are very busy with other stuff and prioritise other things like theatre and sport for a trip, but they do enjoy them.

Anyway, what I was going to say is that I generally enjoy things like this but find I get a bit over saturated after a while, as in there's only so much I can take in, so I don't hesitate to leave after 2 or 3 hours if I've had enough. I also don't enjoy busy places and walking around in slow moving lines of people - only so much of that I can handle before I feel the need to break free!

My dc loved all of these as kids.
As teens they are selective, love markets, enjoy some museums and art galleries but not all.
Probably wouldn't take them round too many stately homes but they would be fine with one every now and again.

PresentPrincess1 · 22/08/2023 20:57

I liked this sort of stuff as a child and so does my 9 year old.

Stompythedinosaur · 22/08/2023 21:36

My dc enjoying going anywhere new.

Stately homes were a harder sell when they were little, and we appreciated when there was a kids activity trail, but now they are preteen they generally find them interesting.

I think it helps if they go with a ln adult who is passionate and can help with understanding what they are seeing and why it is notable or unusual.

whathappenedtosummer23 · 22/08/2023 21:41

Stately homes are the seventh circle of hell to me. However all my kids, teens and young adult love a market especially if there are vintage stalls or food. They all like museums especially the Victoria and Albert, transport museum and the national portrait gallery. They also really like specific exhibitions such as fashion, pop art, immersive ones. there was a wonderful one at the Saatchi gallery not long ago on the history of hip hop they liked too. They’re just getting into the theatre but none of them like musicals

Screamingabdabz · 22/08/2023 21:43

My adult children now tell me that they hated the castles, stately homes and museums I took them to as kids. They were bored shitless. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I took them because I bloody loved them as a child and thought they’d be the same… I was a bored child of the 70s though and they were the Alton Towers of my time!

Redwinestillfine · 22/08/2023 21:51

Mine enjoy the gardens at the stately homes but bored by interiors

SprinkledGlitter · 23/08/2023 17:26

There are some places that if you visit them often become important / special purely for sentimental and nostalgic reasons too.
