Sudden itchy scalp - how to fix?

We came back from holiday and sort of since then, my scalp has been very itchy. I got my H to check it, just in case, and there are no head lice present, thank goodness!
I don't seem to have dandruff, and though it could possibly be from the sun, it's not red or burnt-looking.

I was, as I always do, washing it every evening on holiday as we were swimming, but I haven't done anything differently.
It's driving me mad, trying to ignore it but it's hard!

I've bought a head and shoulders shampoo for itchy scalps and used it once..can anyone recommend anything effective? Thank you.

Eucerin dermo capilliare solution relieves the itching.

personally I would recommend a bottle of conditioner and nit comb to double check no headlice. Those buggers are good at hiding.

A good way to discover any hidden hitch hikers is lavender oil. I used to do it with my kids when I couldn't see anything - just dab some along the top parting, over the top of the ears where you'd take strands for a French plait, about 5 drops worked. I'd then wait and within about 10 seconds, any lice in the area would emerge, gasping for air.

If there aren't any, I second the Eucerin and if Head & Shoulders doesn't work for you, original T-Gel shampooed in (I use one of those massage brushes to really get into the scalp everywhere) and left for five minutes before rinsing really well and conditioning can be really effective.

Thank you both, really appreciate your responses. I don't have lavender oil, but I did just wash it and comb through the bits on the crown and behind my ears and couldn't see anything - they would be visible wouldn't they? Did manage to rip out some hair in the process 😂 I will go to Boots later to get the products you've mentioned. It's the most annoying thing 😭

Do you use a shampoo with silicone? I have had an itchy scalp due to silicone build up.

Wallabyone · 20/08/2023 12:55

@Niftythrifter Actually, I did buy a version of Herbal Essences that I hadn't used before, so perhaps it's that?
Do you have a silicone-free shampoo you could recommend? Thank you

Garner do an oat milk shampoo... it's the best soothing shampoo I've found!

I have this with certain shampoos and conditioners and also rainwater!

I bought this recently and it's a god send. Had 2 years of itchy scalp after a holiday one year and nothing cleared it. Just one day wasn't itchy. I think maybe I got too much sun and it dried out my scalp.

Been away at the beginning of this summer and it started again and this stuff is brilliant. Makes the itchy bits feel cold after spraying it but the sensation to scratch goes immediately. It just dries in your hair and you can come through without any residue.
