If so what are the downsides? And what do you love most about it. I'm considering a move.

TIA

Bumping for you OP. I love the Lakes. Used to holiday there lots as a child as a
grandparent lived there. He always used to
moan about the tourists.

I was born and grew up there. Live out of the area now but still have family there.

Pros-scenery, fresh air, peace and quiet and slower pace of life

Cons-tourists and second home owners who snap up properties so locals struggle to get on housing ladder . Properties then stand empty for most of the year which has knock on effect on schools, shops and services.

Healthcare-my sister needed to see a Consultant regarding back pain and had to travel to Preston-2 hours away which when you have serious back pain is no joke!
People who move to the sticks then complain about the noise and smells - who knew that cows moo and their poop stinks🙄

I would move back in a heartbeat though.

I live just outside the LDNP boundary. I love living here, mainly for the outdoor activities, scenery etc but our local schools are also very good and the community spirit in our village is brilliant. You might not quite get that in more popular spots where there are more 2nd homes, Airbnb etc though.
Disadvantages...well you can't ignore the weather. All those lakes do come from somewhere! Also you need to get used to travelling for everything- healthcare, schools, shops, kids' hobbies and so on. Public transport isn't great so you do need a car. Tourists...well, we need them of course and most are perfectly nice people just wanting to enjoy themselves, but it can get horrendously busy at peak holiday periods and the roads get extremely congested. Also the area is not very diverse.
As with anywhere it will suit some people and not others. We moved here from a major city many years ago and would never go back but we have seen plenty of people arrive wanting to live the rural dream but not be able to get used to it. I'd say it depends a lot on your interests really as obviously outdoor pursuits are very well catered for but other things not so much.

I live about a 30 minute drive away from the lakes.
Being in the lakes is extremely expensive, weather is normally rubbish and as a pp said, all your "locals" are not very local.
You will also have to accept that it's a major tourist destination, so maybe not as peaceful as it seems when you're the tourist.
I feel I have the best of both worlds, close enough to enjoy it regularly and feel familiar and appreciate lovely days there but far away enough to also have access to an easy life.
