It might be appendicitis or something else A&E or carry on waiting for a call back from 111

DD (38) has been having sharp pains in her lower right side for months.
Last night they have got worse her tummy looks as though she is heavily pregnant.
Didn't phone 111 as had a couple of wines.
This morning she phoned 111 at 9.15am who told her a doctor will phone her back.
At 1pm she rang to be told don't go to a&e until you have had this call.
It's now after 4pm.
She is eating, drinking and going to the loo. If she lies down the pain is bearable.
Should she ignore what 111 say and just go to A&E.

IBS is possible but so are several other things. Worth doing a pregnancy test if any chance she could be pregnant. If she develops a temperature or cant wee a&e immediately. Gp appointment Monday if she's not in a&e before that.

Did they at least provide some advice of symptoms that would require a&e immediately?

whatabeautifulwedding · 20/08/2023 09:55

Get her to phone back today for a second opinion if it's still as painful.

Wishitsnows · 20/08/2023 10:04

IBS is an interesting diagnosis over the phone. Can you try to get a f2f appointment?

Op if she's still in pain today I'd get her down to a abd e this am.

Xrays · 20/08/2023 10:09

She should just go to A and E. I think half the time 111 just act as a gateway to stop people going. How can they possibly diagnose without actually seeing her??

That's exactly what 111 is and rightly so. You shouldn't need to go to A&E for stuff a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner can deal with over the 'phone.

They're also aware of deployment/response time if you were to phone 999. When my DP had pneumonia over Xmas 111 initially said call 999 but then asked if I had a car and could get her to A&E as that would be quicker.

You’re talking to someone who has complex health conditions including one that is fatal without a particular medication in an emergency situation and I take 22 medications a day. I know what 111 is for. I also know that if you’re in severe pain then you need to be in a and e.

Covid seems to have given Drs some kind of special vision , I’ve been diagnosed with a variety of ailments over the phone .

MaCrepeSuzette · 20/08/2023 15:22

To be fair doctors were like this pre covid too. IBS = any pain or swelling between the ribs and crotch in a woman that we're not going to investigate.

A male GP very confidently told me that stomach swelling could only be one of 5 things:
faeces
flatulence
foetus
fat
fluid

Mine was a 30cm ovarian tumour 🙄

LivStanshall · 20/08/2023 15:55

I’ve had IBS but never on my right side and does she have a history of it? When I had right sided pain it was an ovarian cyst and I needed surgery. I would head to A&E with those symptoms.

30cm! You poor thing! Hope you're ok now

Omg OP no! I had a ruptured appendix three months ago - I presented at A&E at 12.30 and eventually went to theatre at 20.30, the surgery saved my life.

I had horrendous abdominal pain, could barely walk or stand up straight

larlypops · 20/08/2023 17:21

Could be her gallbladder, I’d definitely make sure she gets it checked out.

anyolddinosaur · 21/08/2023 10:25

How is she today and has she seen a doctor in the flesh? If the pain suddenly goes completely and she feels fine that would possibly be a burst appendix and she should also head to a&e immediately. If she is still not seeing a doctor and the pain gradually goes then the antibiotics may be working.
