I'm painting a large wall this colour, Dragons song by Valspar.

Should I just go for a brilliant white on the woodwork and other 3 walls?

Or something else?

Anyone with an eye for colour/decorating about please?

(There’s a home decoration sub-board, OP, just fyi.)

Why not all the walls in that colour? It’s lovely. What aspect does the room have?

IkeaHelp · 19/08/2023 12:20

I think it would be too dark?

Sorry what do you mean by aspect?

Aspect usually means what direction the room is facing ie west facing etc.
Obviously will affect the light the room gets.

Nice colour, personally I’d get a better quality paint like Johnston’s trade, I’ve not used Valspar but it’s cheaper end stuff and have heard a fair few negative things about it.

And white for the woodwork looks clean, could possibly get an off white but I like the cleanliness of pure white myself.

I've already bought it at £50 a tin :/

I thought it was fancy stuff at that price. I usually get Wilkos own.

I haven't a clue which way it's facing. It's a victorian terrace. Large window, high ceilings but not a massive room.

Well, where does the sun rise or set in relation to the way the room faces? Does it get sun in the morning or evening?

That makes a huge difference to light levels and to how colours appear (and think too about what time of day you’ll use the room most.)

Gorgeous colour, do one wall. Use white non gloss on woodwork, this will make the colour pop. You could go for a coral/orange for warm or a petrol blue contrast for cooler tones for cushions, lampshades etc. Velvet cushions from Dunelm will add richness. Don't buy Farrow & Ball paint!! (sorry Mumsnet) complete waste of money, decoraters hate it. If you buy paint in future go for Leyland trade, excellent quality, doesn't scuff and will mix any Farrow & Ball shafe you want.

I'd do all of it in that colour, it's really nice.

I have a similar colour (Wickes Jewel Green) on one wall and an off-white on all the other walls which is a cool toned white. It works well.

NeedToKnow101 · 19/08/2023 13:46

I have a similar dark forest green on one wall of my living and a light pink, blush pink, on the others, with white woodwork. I like it.

I would say it depends on your furniture and decorations, too.

If your furniture is wooden (oak seems to work nicely) then all walls, though beware you will need decent lighting and/or mirrors throughout to counteract the fact your room will be darker. This works really well if you like dark academia style or similar (I have several walls in my house chosen by my liking for that style).

If your furniture is a white varnish and you like a "cleaner" look, I'd match their colour to the other walls (so a slightly warmer off-white) and make this one your feature wall with a large painting/ picture or mirror.

Be bold and go for all walls the same colour, woodwork in white. If the room has large windows and you pick out accents e.g cushions etc in a brighter colour (white/coral/ochre would all work) it'll look amazing.

Personally I find feature walls a bit dated nowadays but I appreciate everyone has different tastes. I did exactly the same thing in my bedroom (one wall navy and the others white) and I wasn't happy with it, decided to be bold and paint the whole room navy and it is SO much better.
