What do you take to work for lunch?

Just that really, I'm extending my hours in September so will need to take something for lunch but honestly don't fancy sandwiches everyday. I have limited time in the mornings with two different school runs before work so was looking for some inspiration for quick prep, healthy (cheap) lunch ideas.

TIA 😊

Allsorts!
Chicken gyozas with miso soup and chilli rice crackers.
'Salad' of ham, cheese, cucumber, tomatoes and coleslaw with Krackerbread.
Pre-filled toasties in those crimper things that I then pop in the toaster at work.
All the soup!

Make your lunch same time as you make dinner the night before. Either make sure there's enough for leftovers, or set aside some of the veg etc for a salad.

Can you reheat stuff at work? Refrigerate stuff? If yes to either or both, that opens up a lot of options...

Variations on salad, rolls, cheese & crackers ... no microwave, fridge or toaster where I work, no where even to sit comfortably - I am retiring soon and looking forward to having relaxing lunches at my own table Grin.

Littleme2023 · 18/08/2023 19:10

Leftovers - pasta usually
Wraps/rolls/sandwiches
Snacky box - cut up veg, crackers, cream cheese
Cereal or porridge - I always prefer it at a time other than breakfast
Salads

MansfieldLark · 18/08/2023 19:11

I take a mug shot, apple and a double decker bar. Not healthy though.

somethinghastochangesoon · 18/08/2023 19:13

I take the Asda pre prepared salads. I'm getting a bit bored of them though and I think when the weather turns colder I'm going to start using my flask. Prob with leftovers from the night before or soup.

chocoshopoholic · 18/08/2023 19:17

We have microwave, toaster and kettle at work.

Things I take...

  • beans on toast
  • soups (batch cooked and frozen, just left to defrost all morning) leek and potato, carrot and coriander, lentil, mixed veg etc
  • make a big pasta / rice salad and leave in the fridge in pots. I can usually make Sunday evening and take mon to wed (put wet ingredients in the bottom, driest on to then upturn onto a plate to eat for no soggy lettuce)
  • sandwiches
  • leftovers (often in a frozen pot like the soups) to grab and go if I've salad ready on a day with leftovers.

Overnight oats.
Porridge, frozen berries strawberry yogurt & a dollop of Greek yogurt, made the night before in a Tupperware box.

Allsweep · 18/08/2023 19:19

I am a mumsnet cliché and take a massive salad 🥗🤣

chocspot · 18/08/2023 19:34

I get so fed up of sandwiches/ rolls/ wraps/ pittas. I like to take leftovers (we have a microwave I can use to reheat.) Roast works well, also chilli, curry, pasta, stew. Also cold potato salad or pasta salad. If I really can't be bothered to make anything at home I'll occasionally get a meal deal/ pre-made sandwiches/ Morrisons salad bar pasta.

Sorrythatnameistaken · 18/08/2023 19:39

Ooh thank you everyone lots of fab ideas! We do have a microwave and toaster at work so easy to reheat etc! I have hungry children so we rarely have leftovers 🙈 think I'm going to need to start planning ahead!

I do love soup hadn't thought of that so might get myself a decent flask for the winter!

Xxx

Leftovers mostly. Sometimes take an extra packet instant couscous to supplement whatever there is, or a packet of microwave rice, if it’s leftover stew or whatever.

Or I buy a tub of hummus, some falafels or smoked mackerel, some salad bits like leaves, cucumber & cherry tomatoes, maybe potato salad. Could add packet couscous again/leftover or microwave rice. Keep in work fridge and mix n match across different days.

Tins of soup stored in desk drawer are handy in an emergency forgot lunch scenario.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/08/2023 19:46

Naan bread, mini hummus pot, two pre peeled oranges and a yoghurt.
Every single day. My colleagues think it's hilarious. Especially the pre peeked oranges.

NoSquirrels · 18/08/2023 19:46

On the hungry children no leftovers issue, the key is to serve up your portion for tomorrow directly into the Tupperware before letting the rest of them loose on dinner…

Vitriolinsanity · 18/08/2023 19:51

I like a toasted pitta with various dips.

Also toasted bagel with cream cheese.

I don't like washing up.

MyrtleSmurf · 18/08/2023 20:03

In my last job I ALWAYS ended up with similar to what I was packing for my kids - sandwich, grapes, cereal bar. Occasionally pasta leftovers if I had them. Boring! Determined to mix it up a little when I start my new job!

For the poster looking for a flask, I strongly recommend the Sho food flask!

CrazyBatIknow · 18/08/2023 20:07

I take left overs or roast lots of chicken thighs with various veg (my current favourites are peppers, onions, celery, mushrooms and sweet potato. A dollop of everyday seasoning then portion up into the freezer and take 1 to work each day.
Or on another day I have a chopped up boiled egg, chorizo, onions, mushrooms, green beans all mixed with paprika. Delicious.

Maryandherlamb · 18/08/2023 20:12

I'm always envious of everyone's fancy lunches, but end up just taking sandwiches. I'll do either chicken slice bagels, chicken and salad pittas or tuna crunch rolls.

Anoushkaka · 18/08/2023 20:22

Soup
Scrambled egg and toast
Beans on toast
Leftovers
Toasties
Sandwich
Bagel
Wrap
Jacket potatoe with filling
Crackers and cheese with tomatoe

WithIcePlease · 18/08/2023 20:30

Leftovers are my favourite

Notreallyawaitress · 18/08/2023 20:57

Greek yoghurt, berries and granola/ nuts/ grape nuts - can’t do bread at lunchtime, it wipes me out.

Sorrythatnameistaken · 18/08/2023 22:18

Suddenly realising just how boring I've been with my thinking! Loving all the ideas - it's so easy to get stuck in the "school packed lunch" way of doing things I guess 😅
