My other thread is here:
Nerve / medial branch blocks, anyone? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4869211-nerve-medial-branch-blocks-anyone
Hope I've done that right.
It's tomorrow and I'm bricking it, to the point I can't relax.

I'll hold your hand OP. I don't have any experience with this but I hope it goes as well as it can for you tomorrow.

vipersnest1 · 17/08/2023 21:19

Thanks, @Daisychainsandglitter.
As I said, I'm really pleased to be getting it done (it's with a view to getting the nerves burnt out - I've had terrible back pain for years), but it's just the thought of a needle there and I move, voluntarily or involuntarily!
I've also decided that whilst not everyone gets sedation as a matter of course, I'm going to ask for it.

Just found your thread! I’d posted on your original one but I’m fairly certain you’ll be offered sedation as they will need you fairly relaxed but still able to respond to the doctor when they’re placing the needle. Honestly I’ve had it done twice and now have a spinal cord stimulator too, all of the procedures were tolerable and they always have a member of staff responsible for keeping you calm, responding to your needs etc. The sedation is usually very effective.

@Mydoghealsmyheart, Flowers

I don't blame you asking for sedation. Wishing you all the best for tomorrow x

Thank you, @Daisychainsandglitter.

I don’t have any words of wisdom, but sending you positive vibes OP!

NewSw19 · 17/08/2023 22:19

I've had it done 3 x
Also booked in to have it done again in September

They normally sedate me due to me moving because it is painful when the needle goes in ha .....

The relief though that comes once it's done it's amazing!

Good luck

vipersnest1 · 17/08/2023 22:23

Thank you, @SpongeBobSquarePantaloons.
That's what I'm hoping for, @NewSw19. It affects my life in so many ways. If it gives me a way forward, it will be wonderful. For so long, no-one has taken me seriously (I have a history of back pain going back forty years) and finally someone has listened, even though it's taken me to be diagnosed with Fibromyalgia that has got me to this point.

Oh, and I'm hoping that I can get the numbing of my C6/C7 nerve done sooner (or the removal of the bone spur that's pressing on it) as it's under the same team, as it's really causing me problems now.

I have had this procedure twice and an on the list for a third. You will be fine. Hand hold here.

NewSw19 · 17/08/2023 22:35

@vipersnest1

Once I had the first one done the same team pulled me in quickly to continue the treatment - was sort of like once they'd seen me and followed up they moved quickly

I don't drive after I've had them done until the next day as it is quite sore afterwards but I think in my head it was worse than it actually being done ha!

vipersnest1 · 17/08/2023 22:39

@clairethewitch70, it's just the thought of all of my other issues that's so daunting. My logical head says it should be fine!
@NewSw19, that's hopeful - the issue with my neck means it hurts if my neck isn't straight (and I get a horrible burnin g X pins and needles feeling in my back). That too makes my life difficult as it's my dominant arm.

How did it go op?

vipersnest1 · 18/08/2023 06:24

It's today, @bryceQ. I'm up super early (have to be there 11.30) so I could have a drink and take my normal medication.
I'm feeling a bit calmer at the moment.

bryceQ · 18/08/2023 09:29

I've had two injections in my my facet joints and the nerves burned another time which I think the injections are similar to what you're having. All three times were fine, I was sedated so a bit out of it but not fully. They weren't painful.

Wishing you best of luck

vipersnest1 · 18/08/2023 13:17

Well, they 'don't do sedation at this hospital'... (So what was the point of the nil by mouth, then?)
Anyhow, it's done. When the consultant was moving the needle around it hurt like hell, but was over quickly.
My leg feels really weird but I can walk ok.
Thanks to everyone.
@bryceQ, these injections are with a view to having RFE.

bryceQ · 18/08/2023 13:45

Ah glad it's over for you.

The nerve ablation was more painful after for me, I think I had to rest all day. I asked them for loads of sedation as I was in such a bad way physically.

Hope the block helps you

vipersnest1 · 19/08/2023 00:10

@bryceQ, it will be the several coming days that will decide - my foot has only just started to feel like normal, and so far I don't feel the pain that I did, so I'll be able to judge by that. Plus, of course the steroids will kick in after a few days.
It would be lovely if I could find a solution to my back pain - it's severely curtailed my usual life for several years now. I've even had colleagues tell me I shouldn't need to be attached to a TENS machine full time.
I'm waiting to see, with no judgment as to what will happen, but I'd love this to be the solution to the pain I get - it starts, and then there's a whole section of muscle across my back that goes into spasm. If I could get the nerves identified and have one or several oblations, I'd be thrilled.
