Getting a smoke smell out of a room? 😩

IkeaHelp · 17/08/2023 08:37

Just moved and turns out previous tenant smoked in her bedroom.

I know it's going to be a nightmare and around a while but any tips at all on reducing the smell please? 😭

Open the windows

Does it have carpet - if so changing that will make a big difference.

I've heard bowls of vinegar help

IkeaHelp · 17/08/2023 09:39

Yes windows been open. No carpet, just bare floors right now.

I'll try vinegar.

It's so strong :(

If you say tenant I'm guessing you're renting. Some smells can really get into the plaster unfortunately but what may help is if you scrub the walls with sugar soap and repaint.

Danikm151 · 17/08/2023 09:58

Wipe down the walls/ceiling with sugar soap or elbow grease.

Bicarb also absorbs smells

If she was a heavy smoker, it'll have got into the walls. Talk to your landlord - they'll need repainting with a special primer. At worst, you'll need to do it yourself but it could get you out of doing renovations when you move out.

Wash the walls and floors, wash the blind/curtain and windows wide open as much as possible.

It will go eventually. Think of all those smelly old pubs before the smoking indoors ban was introduced and how they eventually stopped smelling without deep cleaning or redecorating throughout

Can you hire a ozone generator? I've had no experience but heard good things, you might need to do some research to be sure

You need to replace any soft furnishings including carpet, you never really get the smell of smoke out of them. Then wash all hard surfaces. And get a specialist odour removal treatment (like ozone) to be done. I know a company called Polygon UK who have locations all around the UK and carry out this service as part of fire restoration services. I know you've not had a fire but I'm sure they'd offer the odour removal service as a stand-alone.
