I've seen something on FB Marketplace, and messaged the seller who has agreed to post it to me. They have sourced the postage price so that on top of the item will be approx £30.

There is no 'buy it now' button on FB....how do I go about paying? Does the seller have to do something or do I? I've never bought from FB Marketplace before so this is all new to me. Does it 'go' through marketplace via PayPal or something?

I looked at the help topics on FB but it seemed to suggest there was a 'buy' button but I'm just not seeing it!

You'll have to ask the seller how they want paying.

Please beware if they are posting it you are open to being scammed. Bank transfer is risky and has no come back - you may just be giving away money. PayPal is covered. Use that.

Perfect, thanks. I've done that and suggest PayPal.

Don’t use PayPal friends and family. I usually offer to pay goods and services and cover the PayPal fee.

marienylonette · 17/08/2023 07:11

Yeah, I did that. It didn't charge me extra though?

PayPal doesn’t charge an extra fee.

Standard PayPal transactions have a fee deducted (2.9% plus 30p)
Of the £30 PayPal will take £1.17

The advice to ‘pay fees not friends and family/money owed’ means to use a standard transaction
When you pay as F&F there is no form of protection (you are telling them that you just owe the money and are handing it over - so you can’t make any claims)

Pay as standard and you can complain about non receipt etc and request a refund via PayPal

In principe a remote seller should ask for all upfront taking into account what money they want left over after fees & postage. But on Facebook marketplace an assumption is that the final sale would often be face to face and by cash
It’s therefore reasonable to agree on the amount to be paid, add postage etc and pay via PayPal for protection whilst topping up to ensure they get the agreed amount in their pocket

A fees calculator is linked below, use the ‘reverse’ calculator to work out the total to cover fees

PS as you have already paid, leave it at that for the moment.
They might be happy with the net amount received

If they come back to you to say that it has been underpaid then ask them to reject the payment (then confirm in your PayPal that it was cancelled) and pay again with the revised amount

If you try to just pay the extra then PayPal keeps getting an extra 30p per transaction

Gotcha. Thanks, I didn't realise all that.

To be honest, the seller and I are both new to this.....and I know you don't really know the other person on the 'other side of the phone' but I think we are just two mums trying to shift/buy gear. It's just a £25 sports bag that's particular to a certain sport! And looking at her profile (which I know could be fake...) she seems very normal.

Cue my post in a few days come when she goes quiet/blocks on me and nothing turns up!
