What inexpensive (ish) pudding would you make for a BBQ?

I'm making a pudding/dessert for a BBQ with about 50-70 people-so it'll have to be quite large or a lot of it. I am trying to think of something that most people will probably like, that isn't going to cost me the earth.

What would you make? Smile

Can you borrow chocolate fountain. You could then do lots of cut up fruit, marshmallows etc.

Tiramisu

All these people saying make a trifle or a tiramisu - how large is your trifle bowl that you can serve 50 to 70 people from it?!

Exactly what I was going to say! You can kind of spot the people with no experience in catering...

OP, honestly, I'd just buy a ton of frozen stuff in. I know people love to sneer at Iceland, but you can get a box of 64 frozen patisserie for £6. Defrost it, plonk it all on a fancy plate, job done. If you REALLY want to make an effort, add some homemade trifle/crumble/whatever, but honestly, making something to feed 50-70 people is nothing like a dinner party for six.

I’ve done desserts for large numbers and trifle my first choice . Use big foil trays ( turkey trays) and these can be stacked to chill . Also Eton mess( sort of) and Rocky road using own brand biscuits. Reduce cost of Eton mess by buying frozen raspberries and make a compote then drizzle the compote and some shop bought lemon curd in the mix instead of fresh fruit.

so rich people just need a wee cube.

I really, really misread this...

I have frequently catered for large numbers. I've made trifles, cheesecakes, crumbles and tiramisus amongst other things in large roasting dishes (the kind you might make lasagne in) - I have quite a collection of those and have supplemented with disposable foil roasting trays when necessary. If by 'no experience in catering' you mean haven't worked in the industry then fair enough. But my experience of catering multiple large family events says you absolutely CAN make trifles, tiramisu etc for big numbers. Just need a bit of lateral thinking and guests just have to accept that if you're making trifle for 80 people it isn't going to come in a cut glass serving bowl.

I am envisioning what a 'Wee Cube' would consist of! Thanks again everyone, some very good ideas here. Smile

Sorry, I wasn't saying one can't cater for large numbers, just that it's a heck of a lot more work than people realise. Not so much the effort, just the time, prep, space, equipment, etc. I'm saying that as someone who used to prepare three two course meals a day for 400 odd people! Occasionally I'd get someone trying to help, and they'd turn up with two tubes of Pringles and a family sized bar of Dairy Milk - which might be interpreted as 'wee cubes' Grin

OP, a lot of places offer catering equipment hire for a day or two, which might be an option for you? Let us know how you get on!
