DGP are having the kids next week for 6 precious nights of freedom! It happens once a year, but last year I was ill, and year prior it was shorter following Covid, so we are beyond excited at having some adult time😊

We’ve left it stupidly late to book anything and now we’re debating where to go (in UK) but have settled on 3/4 options - please help us make a decision as we’re going in circles now..

  1. Devon (south hams area to be close to beaches, but stay in countryside/somewhere peaceful).
  2. Lake District (not sure where is nicest/least full of kids off school though!).
  3. North Wales (somewhere in or around Snowdonia Nat Park).
  4. NE Yorks coastline (village-y type place near beaches).

We’re in the SE, so travel to all of the above is similar journey time ish. The only area I’d the 4 we’ve spent much time in before is Devon, which we love, but maybe nice to go elsewhere for a change!

Main concerns are: not being surrounded by holidaying young families (given we’re having a rest from our own kids!) and beautiful views / places to visit without too much effort involved.

Love to hear everyone’s thoughts / suggestions.

Budget is mid range and up a bit, but we’re not rolling in it and can’t go mega posh😅

I'd go to Wales. I'm not familiar with any of those places though.

We were surprised that the Lakes felt relatively quiet compared to a usual August when we went to Ambleside last week to see family. I think the weather might have put some people off - and to warn, the weather has been properly horrible up here (North West) for the last few weeks.

Have you looked at the weather forecast to see if there’s any stand outs for next week?

I love Devon, but I would very much go by the weather forecast when picking.

I’m being a proper hawkeye on the weather for all regions!

Devon does look best, but NE coast also looks good for first half of the week.

I was wondering if the crap weather may have put a lot of folks off..

South Hams without a shadow of a doubt. Went on holiday there as a kid, took my kids there and they now go there as adults. Bantham beach - glorious.

declutteringmymind · 16/08/2023 22:08

They all sound like family resorts to take the kids to.

I'd do something a bit more grown up, Brighton, Dublin then to the coast, snowden then the coast, or Poole?

Lake Vrnwy Hotel and Spa in mid Wales ... peaceful and beautiful with lovely walks.

ghislaine · 16/08/2023 22:17

Overnight train to the east coast of Scotland? It might be quieter up there as I believe Scottish schools are going back next week. Scotland has some lovely beaches and breathtaking scenery for walks.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but I really don’t fancy a city break, wanting to get away from crowds and the hustle / bustle as my job is incredibly stressful. Gah, wish we could get the days when it wasn’t school hols, but am so grateful to have them and don’t want to make a bad choice 😅

Another vote for Scotland as the kids will be back in school! The Borders?

RiverLen · 17/08/2023 10:31

Another vote for Scotland - Glencoe area is beautiful.

On top of kids back at school, Scotland has longer summer daylight hours.

It is a bit further to drive from South East. We usually travel in the evening, stopping of somewhere near Leeds en route, and arrive late morning the next day.

The area around Snowdonia is lovely and might be a bit quieter - we stayed in what's now called Ty Afon River House, Beddgelert - not cheap but has lovely views from the terrace, coffee on go and cakes left out all day. Nice walks along the river, pubs and pizza place are good for eating out and it's quite central to various things of interest.

Lake District is also lovely, but if you want a relaxing time, maybe stay away from Windermere/Kendal and visit them for the day.

Haven't been to South Hams area of Devon, so can't comment. Yorkshire is nice, particularly the countryside.
