Gammon, is it suitable

We have invited friends over for dinner on Sunday, as it’s going to be warm dh has suggested gammon with veg and cheese sauce. I am not sure, do most people like it? Is it ok cold with veg? I thought chicken was a safer option but he says it’s more faff.

Cold, sliced gammon in a thing of beauty....but I wouldn't put hot veg with it.
Do a fancy ploughman's. Nice cheeses, pickles, couple of cutted up pork pies & French stick, bit of nice salad,

My family loves a ham. Agree with PP though that I wouldn't serve cold ham with hot sides. Is there a reason why you don't want to serve it hot? If so, PPs suggestion of serving as a ploughman's is a good idea. Otherwise I'd serve it hot, perhaps with leeks in cheese sauce and some buttery and herby new potatoes.

We've done gammon lots of times for a large group of people. Served with chips / roast potatoes, coleslaw, pineapple and salad. We kept the gammon warm by cooking the gammon in the slow cooker.

If serving cold, I'd do more salads, including a potato salad, then maybe some garlic bread to make sure everyone is stuffed 😂

I agree cold would be nice. Perhaps do a small chicken too to in case people not that keen on gammon. You can use the leftovers in the week.

I prefer gammon hot as a roast dinner. I could eat cold with a jacket potato and salad but not cold gammon with a cheese sauce and hot veg that just doesn't sound right. If the meat is definitely going to be cold then stick with jackets and salads. Chicken is also fine cold with jacket and salad.

ElFupacabra · 16/08/2023 07:11

My mother in law makes this sometimes and while it’s fine and a pleasant meal, it’s not what I would expect at a dinner party / friends house. Cold with other sides and crudités is the way to go.

No to the combination of cold sliced gammon with hot veg/sauce it's also not really a complete meal. I'd serve as a salad if it's due to be hot

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 16/08/2023 07:23

I know our summer’s weather has been pretty atrocious but I definitely think that hot gammon and hot veg, particularly anything in cheese sauce, is definitely an autumn/winter meal. It’s the sort of comforting meal that I save up and look forward to during the darker, colder months.
Cold gammon with salads would be perfect though.

Thanks everyone, cold it is then with salads. What sides do you think? I can make coleslaw, shall I do new potatoes with herb butter? Not very good at this am I :)

I wld do the coleslaw and plan potatoes. A salad. Boiled eggs are nice with gamon. Beetroot. Pickled onions. Crusty bread. Perhaps a quiche or pork pie.

Thanks a million everyone, just sorted my online shop.
I have gammon, quiche, new potatoes and herbs, homemade coleslaw, pickles, salads and crusty bread. Is that ok?
Now to sort dessert, any ideas please?

It will be homemade, I have considered some sort of raspberry trifle or a chocolate mousse type thing?

Baked peaches with almonds and cream for pudding. We are Kosher and veggie, but I'd come over to eat that pudding Grin

Arubasea · 17/08/2023 07:59

Baked peaches sound fabulous will look that up, thanks!

That sound lovely, I love gammon and new potatoes in the summer. I would do a crisp green salad to go with it (dressing served on the side, I hate dressing ) a mixed selection of rice/pasta/grains type salads, tesco have their vine ripen tomatoes on offer this week and they are lovely sliced thin with mozzarella torn up and scattered over.

desert, home made I would do a cheesecake and a fruit platter, bought my favourite at the moment is Apple strudel and Cornish icecream.

oh and I would make my own bread rolls or buy some of those part baked ones to serve warm with butter.

EvenlyDetermined · 17/08/2023 08:14

I'd either do the new potatoes as potato salad rather than hot with butter (at least if you do them hot leave the butter off, they are much nicer plain).
