Getting rid of old beds and mattresses

How do you dispose of larger beds and mattresses? I only have a small car so no chance of me taking them to the dump. Have checked the council website and they can do a collection of larger items but it means leaving the item/s outside your property. Not sure I would want the neighbours admiring my stained mattresses.

Some shops offer a collection service for your old mattress when you buy a new one. I have always done this.

Wrap the mattress in bin bags maybe

I always use the larger waste collection, it's £10 for 3 items in my area and you only have to put it out the morning of collection. As pp said wrap mattress in bin bags if you're embarrassed or leave a fitted sheet on it!

Beds and very clean mattresses, on Facebook
Bulky waste collection = don't be bashful about stains, everyone has them. You can roll up the mattress and tie up with some rope?

There are businesses that will take way your junk, including beds and mattresses. Just look online. Check they are registered with the EA/SEPA so they don't do fly tipping.

Dealing with larger beds and mattresses for disposal can indeed be challenging, especially without a large vehicle. I faced a similar situation recently and found a few solutions that might work for you.
One option is to schedule a bulky item collection with your local council, as you mentioned. While it means leaving the items outside, it's convenient and ensures proper disposal.
If you're concerned about neighbors seeing the mattresses, you can cover them with a tarp or old sheets until collection day. This can help maintain privacy and minimize any discomfort.
For more tips on disposing of mattresses effectively, I found this guide from Sleep Advisory really helpful: How to Dispose of a Mattress. It covers various disposal methods and considerations, which might assist you further.
I hope these suggestions help you navigate the process smoothly!

When we put out bulky waste they won't collect it unless we cover it in plastic, no matter how bad the condition its usually taken before the council turn up. You can buy rolls of dust sheet plastic, or sometimes a new mattress is supplied in a large bag and you can reuse that.

Like pps have said stick an old sheet you don’t mind sacrificing on the mattress and get the council to collect
or if you’ve got a local facebook group or similar, post on there to see if there is anyone with a van that would take it to the tip for you for a small fee
