Which service for my horrifying toenail?

About 5 months ago I did a long walk in some ill fitting wellies. My big toe hurt the whole way. About a month later I noticed that the nail was kind of lifting and looking odd. Anyway, in conclusion, it’s been threatening to come off totally for a while and last night I caught it in a sock and it’s almost totally off.
It didn’t bleed much (as it was lifted anyway) and is still attached down the right hand side. I have put a plaster on it to hold it down but I assume I should get it looked at.
So, is it a Dr, podiatrist or minor injuries place I should go to? It’s not an emergency, it doesn’t really hurt much and isn’t bleeding or anything.

My DH has lost many a toe nail playing football, I’m afraid you just have to wait for nail to fall off completely and then new toe nail can grow, which takes ages. Obviously if it’s sore or looks infected get it seen, but I doubt GP would take nail off for you, but a podiatrist probably would.

That happened to me when I went to a festival in trainers that were too small Grin Both my big toe nails came off completely eventually but soon grew back.

Podiatrist is best. Private is easier

Do you think it will fall totally by itself? It’s like a hinge down the side at the moment. I’ve got a plaster over it but would it be ok if water gets in there etc? I don’t know whether it’s better to leave the nail on, protecting the skin underneath, or have it off totally.

I normally just leave them to come off in their own time

tape down so it doesn't get pulled

spray with disinfectant occasionally

I wouldn't say it needed anyone to look at it, but its your nail, so you decide

Cool, I’ll leave it this week and see how it looks. Never had this before! Damn wellies, WELLIES! Wasn’t even like I was wearing some fancy, high heeled shoe!
I feel that I do not deserve this.

I'm a runner and my big toe nail has recently fallen off. It was black for ages, then became loose over time, and eventually just fell off. Apparently it can take a year or more to grow back. 🤒

Is the skin underneath really sensitive?
Do you keep it covered when you’ve got socks on?

I was just mentioning to a friend the other day that I’m 45 and every injury or weakness that my body has, has come about through trying to keep healthy and fit.
Achillies tendon flares up from time to time (running)

I'd put Sudacrem on with a dressing or large plaster for a few days. It will come off. I wouldn't go anywhere to get it looked at.

UnderCarraigeWoes · 14/08/2023 18:01

Is a new name be growing underneath? I lbw lost many a toenail runnjng and they usually turn a funny colour as they nee one grows underneath and then detach.

Cockle1234 · 14/08/2023 18:49

If it's feeling particularly sensitive when it drops off then this might help - www.amazon.co.uk/Silipos-Protection-Conditions-Protects-Pressure/dp/B009PK1SNY/ref=asc_df_B009PK1SNY/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309964069570&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12757380770714296470&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006868&hvtargid=pla-564703366556&psc=1
I've lost many many toenails (running) and I've never seen anyone about it, they've always grown back. The big toe takes a while, but it comes back in time.
