Does having to size up bother you?

I had to size up today in a pair of jeans from a 9 to an 11 and wasn’t bothered which is progress for me.

That's great! I'm glad you're feeling okay about it.

I don't worry because I just think clothes are made to fit me not the other way around so I don't mind if I need to size up.

Peony654 · 14/08/2023 16:56

Not at all. Sizes are all so different, and better to be comfortable

Charrington · 14/08/2023 16:59

No. I often try on tops in larger sizes because sometimes they flow better. I always buy knickers and pyjamas in a bigger size than my trousers. It’s just an arbitrary number.

Oldraver · 14/08/2023 17:00

Not at all. I buy mostly from Lady V and depending on the style depends on the size I will need

GrandHighPoohbah · 14/08/2023 17:02

I switch sizes depending on the shop, the fabric and the cut of the garment. I buy what I think looks and feels the best.

Wrongsideofpennines · 14/08/2023 17:04

Yes. Because sizes should be made standard. Particularly in the same store. I don't understand why I should have to buy a size 12 and a 16 in the same store.

My worst one was as a size 14 having to buy a size 22 swimming costume for it to fit. Why would I ever know I need to size up that much?

buzzlightyearsgloves · 14/08/2023 17:05

Yes, unfortunately It can lead me to very restrictive eating and really effect my mood. Stupid really as it's just a number on a tag

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/08/2023 17:12

No. If I use a vintage pattern I can be a 16 and for some garments a modern 10 so I don’t feel attached to any particular size.

Someone pointed out to me recently that tape measures are a 19th century invention, so before that the idea of defining yourself by an arbitrary number just didn’t exist- your tailor might have your measurements in the form of a string with knots on it and you could go through life never knowing how that compared to anyone else.

I like clothes to fit and a bigger person can look better in a garment that fits them beautifully than a smaller person in the same garment if it’s too big for them. When you’re sewing you need to be completely dispassionate to get the right size.

Niftythrifter · 14/08/2023 17:12

@buzzlightyearsgloves I get that too. It normally affects my self esteem and mood for the day and I am not saying that should I have to do it again that it won’t bother me but today is a good day.

I consider sizing in clothes to be a guide only. In M&S for example, I know that if I want a dress, I try an 18. If I want blue jeans I try a 20 and if I want black jeans I try a 22. Yes, it's ridiculous, and really isn't helpful if you're online shopping, and I know I have a lardy arse, but I don't really care what the number says.

When I bought my wedding dress, the lady in the shop (designed for the curvier lady) was at pains to point out that she had to order the dress at the size of my arse largest point and that they always ran small, then wrote "26" on the order form. It really didn't bother me. I know if I went in a shop and picked up something in a size 26 it would absolutely swamp me.

I know it would upset some people, but nowadays the numbering system is so wildly out of kilter from one shop to the next, I actually have no idea what size I'm "supposed" to be.

Couldn't do my bra up this morning. Couldn't do any of them up. Bugger bugger bugger.

ASGIRC · 14/08/2023 18:03

It only annoys me if I know Im having to size up because MY SIZE has gone up, not if the clothes manufacturers are a bit shit.
having to buy a size 14 of a pair of trousers, but knowing I can still fit in my size 10s I have at home? Not a worry at all.
Not fitting in my size 10s? worry!

splishsplash3 · 14/08/2023 18:51

Yeah I hate it and it makes me feel like shit

Doingmybest12 · 14/08/2023 19:06

Yes, I have a mental block about having to have a size up from what I am now. As a skinny teen I bought this size all the time as it hung off me and swished around. It's my problem , I still can't accept I have the body of a middle aged mum of three not a skinny teen. Not that I do much to roll back the years though,I really could try harder to stay fitter and slimmer .
