COVID cringe memories (light hearted)

Looking back at the pandemic, especially at its height in 2020, what made your toes curl?

  1. "Imagine". Enough said.
  2. The Marsh family.
  3. On the local news, footage was shown of the Thursday clap (may or June). There was a parade of bhangra drummers and smarmy bratty kids doing the irritating floss dance. Was that point the 'applause' was seen as having had it's day.

I know some people may mention the dancing nurses, I only saw tiny clips on the news. Even that made me cringe.

There was so much bollocks from the police during Covid.

Policing people's shopping trolleys and the supermarket aisles to see that people were only buying "essentials" and not chocolate or Easter eggs!!

Drones over the Peak District to catch walkers (not even covered by the guidelines)!!

Warning people for having a coffee in public while out in a park!!!

Arresting people for sitting quietly on park benches (or threatening to)!!

Then came the Sarah Everard issue. Wayne Couzens used his warrant card to arrest her for a minor infringement of the rules, abducted and killed her!!😠☹️

Yeah, funny how the police found the time for all that nonsense, yet they're apparently too busy to deal with burglaries, antisocial behaviour, speeding motorists/going through red traffic lights, etc. They can find the time to do things they want to do, can't they??

Whatever blue masks we bought always had a chemical stink. I often wondered what on earth we were breathing in and what the long term effects would be. I would put mine on at the last possible moment and whip it off as soon as I could.

I have asthma well controlled after putting on the mask I started coughing. I was typhoid Mary when shopping

  • True, as if economy was some abstract concept completely detached from people’s lives or only benefitting ‘The Rich’. Not that we needed a healthy economy to sustain the NHS amongst other things*

And healthy people to work in the economy

(or else the government will have to get a load of Mexicans, Brazilians and Malaysians in.)

Equally there are people who cant work due to waiting for things like knee and hip replacements. Which the NHS is now behind with

Lockdown also resulted in weight gain which I doubt is good for knee and hip joints

CloudyMcCloud · 15/08/2023 14:28

Plus mental health deterioration and increased alcohol abuse plus DV

How did "lockdown" do that when we were all positively exhorted to get out and exercise every day?!

People were stressed and mh deteriorated did you miss all that?

DV, weight and alcohol abuse all increased

Were you one of the ones berating those pointing out the downsides, is that why you didn’t notice them?

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2023 14:36

Cool .....................oh wait i dont recall Bravissimo opening any of their shops risking a massive fine so they could measure me for a sports bra I cant do it myself because im DYSCALCULIC I would need this for excersising.

You also have to be in the right frame of mind to excersise. If looking and feeling like a scruffbag worked and got people to excercise wouldnt we still be living that way now?

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2023 14:37

So why did those two women get fined for WALKING with their drinks then

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2023 14:40

And the lack of acknowledgement of what the general public sacrificed and the minimization of how a lot of us felt will ensure non compliance next time.

im not locking down for TB/diptheria if the asylum mess backfires on them

BerriesandLeaves · 15/08/2023 14:47

I remember a mumsnet post started by a jogger who was annoyed at people coming out for walks to the park who didn't usually, as if they owned the park.

Before lockdown my father in law used to look after our dog whilst we were at work which included taking it for a walk. He also used to meet up with dh often and dh would encourage him to go on short walks or dh would sit with his mum who has alzheimers whilst fil went out. That all stopped during lockdown.

It was OK for us living in a lovely area 5 mins walk from a country park but fil lives in a terrace house in a run down area.

Clawdy · 15/08/2023 15:07

I remember walking round a corner and nearly bumping into a woman who'd just jumped out of her car. I said "Sorry!" and she shrieked "Bloody hell!! " and ran up her path, shaking with rage and nearly in tears.

Bookist · 15/08/2023 15:18

The slow, horrifying realisation that so very many people clearly enjoyed the restrictions, virtue signalling and petty point scoring. So many small minded people reveled in their lives (and everyone else's) becoming that much smaller. As the lockdown began I made an educated guess about which of my acquaintances would be curtain twitchers and which ones would get Long Covid. I was 100% accurate.

Because Derbyshire police were on a power trip.

Previously worked for Bravissimo for many years, I can assure you they don't measure! They fit you without measuring tapes because measuring tapes don't work. But that's a whole other thread!
They still had a fitting guide video on their website throughout the pandemic. They offered virtual fittings as well over video calls or telephone. In fact they still offer that service now for anyone who cannot visit a store but still wants a proper bra fitting.
I realise it wasn't the point of your whole comment but just worth pointing it out since they still worked bloody hard during the pandemic and it's worth noting.

meatbaseddessert · 15/08/2023 15:37

Forced 'online fun' at work.

Not bring able to drink in the pub unless you had a scotch egg of a certain size at the same time to ward off the evil virus

Moonlightdust · 15/08/2023 15:38

I just remembered one! Nothing was more cringeworthy than hearing my SIL bought a steamer and steamed her whole family down from head to foot including their shoes each time they entered the house from outside! That was another level of craziness 😂

lemmein · 15/08/2023 15:40

It's really terrifying how quickly and willingly people accepted restrictions, going so far as reporting their neighbours for any sniff of non-compliance.

A friend of a friend of mine was dying of cancer - in her last few days her husband arranged a small get together in her garden with a few close friends (4 IIRC). Someone reported them and the police attended.

Meanwhile, the police turned a blind eye at Downing Street 🙄

Petty point scoring - my neighbour always hated my cat, so when she read something in the paper about a cat in New York or somewhere having covid, she launched another broadside about 'keeping your cat in' and 'oul cats spreading coronavirus everywhere.' It just supercharged so many simmering neighbourhood annoyances and tensions.

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2023 15:56

@recyclemeagain Thankyou for that info. I didnt realise they were doing all that during Covid It wasnt well publicised. Wimmins things innit

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2023 15:57

@lemmein Fury inducing isnt it? The police stood there while suitcases of booze were brought in.

EvilElsa · 15/08/2023 15:59

Covid really did bring out the nasty side of people unfortunately. I live in a small village and the Facebook page for the village was vile! Full of "naming and shaming" for all manner of things that the person deemed illegal/wrong. Photos of people taking their second walk of the day, pointing out which house hadn't clapped or hammered a saucepan for the NHS (we never did). I actually left Facebook for good during that time and never went back! You could tell some people got a real kick out of public shaming others.
The word "Covidiots". It hurt just to type it. So embarrassing and try hard. Trotted out by DM readers everywhere.
My neighbour was pictured in the paper in the supermarket in a full hazmat suit with mask.
I worked throughout and had to carry proof of what I do so if the police stopped me I could show them.
DH and I pretending we were not together at the supermarket so we could both go in (were shopping for someone else who couldn't go out as well as for us). Was absolutely ridiculous. We went together and then were worried we would get stopped by the supermarket for being a pair so I would get out first and go in and he would follow 5 mins later. Seems unreal looking back now.
