COVID cringe memories (light hearted)

Looking back at the pandemic, especially at its height in 2020, what made your toes curl?

  1. "Imagine". Enough said.
  2. The Marsh family.
  3. On the local news, footage was shown of the Thursday clap (may or June). There was a parade of bhangra drummers and smarmy bratty kids doing the irritating floss dance. Was that point the 'applause' was seen as having had it's day.

I know some people may mention the dancing nurses, I only saw tiny clips on the news. Even that made me cringe.

Gyms were closed but takeaways/fast food was open and available

Hindsight is wonderful, especially backed up by all the knowledge we have gained since.

But it was truly terrifying in the beginning, because - and people forget this - we had no defence against it, it was brand new, and we knew nothing about how it spread or what the effects were, or how to treat it.

Can you remember the tv pictures of coffins in the streets in Italy? The numbers of dead each day in the UK in the thousands?

Keeping people apart until we understood what would stop the spread, and how it could be treated, was the only sensible option. It’s easy to forget now why we did things, because now we know (many of) the effects and have effective vaccines and acquired immunity.

First sensible post on the thread. God help us when the next pandemic arrives- seems like there's no sensible middle ground between berating others for picking up non essential items, and not bothering with any sensible short term restrictions at all.

Iknownothing · 14/08/2023 18:58

The one that stuck in my head was a thread on here where someone had shared a play dough recipe to keep toddlers entertained and was absolutely torn apart for wasting ‘essential’ flour when somebody could be using it to make bread.
The clapping was a nice thing the first couple of times to show appreciation but then it became a chore and virtue signalling. And yes it should have been for more than just nhs workers…

dramoy · 14/08/2023 19:01

I remember that, so many miserable people b

TBF there wasn't really any choice about keeping them open. There are some people who rely on takeaways to eat, usually the most chaotic and otherwise vulnerable. I have a relative with MH/addiction problems and in the middle of a binge the local chippy is the only food they're capable of sorting.

CrazyFrogDingDing · 14/08/2023 19:02

All of it. I didn't take any notice and carried on with my normal daily stuff, including leaving the house as often as I wanted, refusing to participate in the track and trace nonsense and refusing to wear a mask.
The thread on here at the time debating whether a cucumber counted as essential shopping was hilarious with the amount of hysteria.

Nah, it wasn't. Whenever this topic comes up, there's always someone who rushes to trot something trite about hindsight out, but plenty of this was obviously stupid at the time even if one supported or at least accepted the restrictions based approach. The claims otherwise don't get any less daft with repetition.

dramoy · 14/08/2023 19:05

And there was so much "well you should be grateful because you can wfh", "you should be grateful you have a job", "at least you're not in a hospital bed", etc basically you couldn't moan about anything unless you were dead!

I was speaking to a relative a few weeks ago who lives in France, who was telling me that her and her friends watched England thinking we were doing such a better job of managing lock downs etc than they were (she felt their local laws were mad...). So I think everyone just thought their country was terrible and everyone else was doing it better...

I can well believe it.

Wintersgirl · 14/08/2023 19:06

And there are also still some rainbows in windows round here. And one house who still has a notice up on their door saying they're shielding.

I'm pretty certain there are hoards of people who really want to go back to that time, well they fuck off to the far side of fuck...

pamplemoussemousse · 14/08/2023 19:06

All of it.

The clapping on our street was a red herring to sit outside and have a non distanced chat with your neighbours. Me and the fella next door used to use it as an excuse to have a beer together 🤣

In the early days dh and I were ‘baking’ our daily paper in the oven for 10 minutes every morning, to kill any nasty little COVID bugs lurking on it. 😂

This is my favourite 🤣

My friend had twins in scubu each parent being forced to pick a twin and never touch the other and not to visit together ....nuts they still lived together etc.

My god! That is abusive to both mother and child.

Stressedoutforever · 14/08/2023 19:10

My nightmare neighbour smashed my windscreen and I needed a replacement, my insurance company said we could have it repaired but only because we were a key worker household- otherwise it was no windscreen for you 😂

EmilyBrontesGhost · 14/08/2023 19:11

A favourite on Twitter was:

"if you don't like the mask you will hate the ventilator"

LittleMissDarkness · 14/08/2023 19:11

Hands. Face. Space

Fuck. Right. Off

Wintersgirl · 14/08/2023 19:12

People wearing those absurd visor masks that were completely exposed at the bottom.

Yes and it always seemed to be old ladies with white hair that wore them! (well in my area anyway)

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 14/08/2023 19:13

The clapping itself wasn't so bad..the Facebook comments however. Saying what road hadn't clapped. Some people would say stop setting off fireworks because I'm a NHS worked and need the sleep. People would then jump down their throat and say they can show how they want to care whatever way they want doesn't matter who it disturbs...

The one way system which meant you were in the shops longer.

Tumbleweed101 · 14/08/2023 19:13

Waiting up until midnight to book a tesco delivery slot for the follow week when they got released. Did the same for my mum and my workplace! I was always quite proud of my ability to secure a slot 🤣. I had been getting deliveries long before covid though.

LittleMissDarkness · 14/08/2023 19:14

Oh and wash your hands singing two Happy Birthdays

@FrostieBoabby

Covid grants, so many millions given out without proper audit, scrutiny and checks. So much money fell into a blackhole.

At the same time, 3 million were excluded and got sod all!

dutysuite · 14/08/2023 19:16

The whole thing makes me feel foolish and I wish I’d never had the jab, I’m so glad I didn’t encourage my children to have it. At the time I hated my children having to wear masks all day at school, I worried about the fibres from the mask going into their lungs. Eat out to help out: had to wear a mask entering the restaurant but could take it off once seated, even then we thought it was ridiculous.

40andlovelife · 14/08/2023 19:16

I like these posts. By admitting how batshit we all acted we are unlikely to repeat the same mistakes in the future,

Wintersgirl · 14/08/2023 19:18

It wasn't just clapping though, some brought out pots and pans.....fucking hell how cringe!
