Meat and use by dates

Would you cook and eat meat with today's use by date?

Yes of course, unless it was obviously off.

Inmybirthdaysuit · 14/08/2023 13:43

Yeah. To be honest we get all of our meat in too good to go boxes from aldi at the moment so everything is on 'today date'. We either have it the day after or I freeze it and it is always fine.

DinosaurOfFire · 14/08/2023 13:44

Yes, sometimes I'll use it a day afterwards too if it looks and smells fine and is going to be cooked.

Yes absolutely. Assuming it smelled and looked ok.

Why wouldn't you? That is the question.

Obviously it needs to pass the sniff test and you need to be confident your fridge is working correctly and it hasn't been left at room temperature for hours at a time, but otherwise, of course. I'd also do so on the day after, subject to the above and have done many times.

Kam610 · 14/08/2023 14:06

Yes. I've used meat past it's use by date as long as it smells and looks OK. I have a meat thermometer and always make sure it's cooked to the correct temperature.

Meat like beef minced meat in the plastic trays, and anything vacuum packed will normally last a long time after their use by date, many things up to a week if it's been kept unopened in at the right temperature in the fridge. Beef and pork usually lasts the longest, and chicken maybe a few days after.

We've had steaks in the fridge a month over their use by date. The colour was fine, the smell was fine - not going to throw it away just because the date on it says to. Still cooked and tasted perfect.

Why would you not though?
