National Trust membership - parents & one child under 5?

Just a query about NT membership, as a family member has offered it as a gift this Christmas. DH and I will have (all being well) our little one joining us in the new year. Since children under 5 are free, would we be ok with an adult joint membership rather than a family membership, until s/he is 5? There’s not a dramatic price difference, but just to know which one would be appropriate for us. Thanks!

Yes, that's all you need for now, we do the same!

Yes. We had joint adult membership for years then when DC1 turned 5 added him as a junior member separately. Now DC2 is also 5 we should change it to family but they were having issued with their phone lines some just added her as another separate junior member. It's so cheap anyway for kids.

Thanks everyone!

Just one more quick query: I assume, if we had a joint membership, that I’d be fine to go by myself, i.e. you don’t always need to be in the pair! Thinking of when I’m on mat leave, if me & LO were to head out for an afternoon say.

Yep, that's fine too!

Also has the advantage that if you are both there but one of you has forgotten your card they can use the fact its joint membership to just let you both in. But yes, also fine to go on your own or hist one adult plus DC.

Thank you! I was probably thinking of something along the lines of those Two Together railcards where you both have to be present 🤣 It will hopefully be a very useful gift, between mat leave & then days out as a family.

I agree that going on your own, with or without LO, will be fine, even with joint membership.

I've used a few of the free family passes that have been in newspapers over the last year or two and most of the time I went by myself.
