DD (3.5) suddenly wetting herself after a week of diarrhoea?

Definitely not a poo troll. Or a wee one. Not looking for anyone to give me weird stories of their own, but for some advice.

DD (3.5) has has a week or so of diarrhoea / upset stomach. It’s been waking her up about 5am so we’ve popped her in a nappy overnight and sometimes she’s not making it to the loo. We had a think about what was different and she’s on new chewy vitamins for 9 days so stopped that and given her probiotics last 2 days. BM today seems much better, firmer and she hasn’t woken up at 5am to use the loo.

But now today, she suddenly cannot make it to the toilet in time for a wee. She’s had quite a few wees and not made the potty, whereas usually she can hold it for hours and hours.

Shes also complaining that her legs hurt, and tonight that her “tummy” hurts (after a wee).

I’m making a dr appt for the morn but wonder if anyone has any idea what this could be. I wonder if the legs are growing pains; and that she’s had a stomach bug and that some bacteria from the diarrhoea has entered the urinary tract and given her a UTI, or does this sound like anything connected?

again, absolutely not a troll and please do not post anything weird / sensitive / TMI that could be troll fodder. Just want my DD to be better.

TIA

Definitely sounds like it could be a uti and they’re very common after an upset stomach. Could you give her some calpol or something for tonight to at least try to deal with the pain from it?

Possibly a UTI, possibly association with the nappy? Hard when they’ve lost routine through illness bless her. One of mine had a few accidents when he was constipated, once we sorted that out it stopped immediately but don’t think it can possibly be that in your case

Definitely sounds like a UTI. Take a wee sample with you if you can.

I only know about this because Katherine Ryan was talking about it on her podcast a couple of months ago, as her baby daughter needed antibiotics for a UTI after having an upset stomach. The nappy makes it easier for the bacteria to spread, no matter how scrupulous you are with clean-up.

UTIs are miserable - I hope the GP can see her quickly and she starts feeling better soon.

Very useful thoughts, thanks all. I’ll make sure to take a urine sample when seeing the dr.

Do you think the leg pain is related or maybe just growing pains?

Should say she went to bed no probs tonight but I gave her ibuprofen beforehand anyway. She’s eating and drinking like normal and generally happy, no temp

Did she point to which part of her legs are hurting? If not, it might just be that she doesn't quite have the language yet.

E.g. she can't precisely identify the UTI pain, so says her legs hurt.

I did wonder this. She’s been saying her legs hurt for a few weeks though, tending to be her thighs / behind her knees / calves

My Mum suffers with UTI’s and always complains that her legs hurt when she has one. No idea why but she does also have dementia so maybe she’s lost the language to describe what she means. 🤷‍♀️

The germs from the tummy upset have got into her waterworks and she likely has a UTI. Any fever or back pain go straight to urgent care because I developed nephritis under similar conditions once and became super unwell. In the meantime , plenty of water and watered down juice and put a potty on a bed mat next to her bed so she doesn’t have to go far to use it. Let her rest, an iPad or a colouring book is a perfectly acceptable way for a little girl to spend a day while she has this.
