What's going on with the plumber?

He's he's a youngish man who came with a very strong recommendation from a friend. She coached him at football from age 7-18 and he's done a lot of work at her house.

To begin with he was indeed brilliant. Returned calls promptly, turned up when he said he would, let me know if he was running a few minutes late, seemed to know what he was doing and what he was talking about. He did quite a complex job on my heating which was all good but I had trouble resetting the thermostat and he came back at 9pm on a Saturday night to sort it.

Then I asked him back to do some minor jobs, a dripping tap, a stuck tap etc. He charged quite a lot of money (I thought) but I know trades are expensive and I was pleased to have found a reliable one.

However, one of the taps he replaced is dripping. I text him thinking that he'd get back to me like he usually does, but he didn't. I left it a few days in case he was away and tried again. Still nothing. In the end I spoke to the friend who recommended him, just to ask if she knew if he was OK. She contacted him and he was on the phone almost immediately, very apologetic and came round next day.

He needed to order a part which he said he'd done there and then, he'd contact me when he got it...that was 4 weeks ago. I text him a follow up on Friday....nothing.

I guess I won't be using him again but I do need this fixed and I also wonder what's happened when he was so good?

You were a demanding customer. You're not worth his valuable time. Having trouble resetting the thermostat and dripping and stuck taps are not worth doing for a plumber who can make much more money doing one big job.

He's ditched you for a better offer. And you sound like a bit of a pain tbh.

@Sparklfairy

to say OP “sounds like a bit of a pain” is very judgmental. She’s entitled to get work completed to professional standard.

Yeah I wonder if he's one of those "won't get out of bed for less than £££" types.
The job is probably too small for him.

Do you know a local handyman? I think it's time to find someone else.

Sorry? He left me with a thermostat that wouldn't talk to the boiler and the heating turned on full. I didn't demand he came out there and then, I just called to ask what I needed to do. He didn't know and offered to come round. It took him 2 hours to sort it out so I really don't think it was something I should have been able to do easily.

Re the taps I deliberately waited until I had a few jobs that needed doing. It's hardly my fault that one of ones he replaced is dripping.

If he didn't want the job he should have said so but as he took it, surely it's reasonable to expect he puts it right?
