Calling any Londoners

I'm hoping to surprise DDfor her birthday and arrange a weekend away instead of a physical
Gift.

Nothing high end or stupidly expensive but something more like seeing a museum then going to see Camden or Portobello markets followed by food in a hearty or
Down to earth style food place.

We're after a general mooch, for a
Friday and Saturday night.

I'd be grateful for all suggestions of where to stay and where else to go best suited for this part of London. Thanks in advance.

How old is she?

LittleEsme · 13/08/2023 13:45

She's 17

Premiere Inn at Achway is great and close to Camden.
Northern line so you can get to centre v quickly.

Right near Highgate too.

When we visit London we always go out a little bit from the madness.

There's also a good Premier Inn near Monument which is so peaceful and right in the Thames really.

Really depends what she likes :

There are some cool walking tours like east London grafitti one or a Harry Potter one.
Museums:
Huntarian
Dennis Severs House
Docklands
The Greenwich ones

As you say Camden market is amazing for food.

Flat iron is great if you like steak and very good value

There are some amazing afternoon teas that are fun

Highgate cemetery could be interesting depending on what she is interested in

bryceQ · 13/08/2023 18:30

Oh the Pho chain is also really tasty and reasonably priced

The Cumberland at Marble Arch is quite funky. It used to be the Hard Rock Hotel.

Leeds2 · 13/08/2023 22:40

China Town for dinner. Plenty of options, no reservations needed.
Walking over the top of the 02 as an activity.
A ghost walk.
Theatre trip.
Afternoon tea on a London bus.

Plantyplantplants · 13/08/2023 22:52

Borough market for food. Tate modern and a walk along south bank to the London eye maybe.

Croissantsandpistachio · 13/08/2023 23:03

https://www.godsownjunkyard.co.uk/ if she likes instagramming everything. Not massively central though. What about tickets for something at the Young Vic?

Thanks for this - @Knackeredhamster I have absolutely no idea how I missed your reply. I thought no one else had answered and I left the thread until now.

Those hotel recommendations are great - I'll have a look at those, definitely.

Thanks everyone - some fantastic suggestions here. DD likes her shopping in markets, loves walking and general sightseeing. The afternoon tea sounds amazing and I know market food would be definitely an attraction.

She's obsessed with Markets - what's Portobello like?

Hasn't changed much from this song!

We are Londoners currently planning a day out and have decided to get the canal boat from Little Venice (Paddington) to Camden.

You can walk to Portobello Road from Paddington if you base yourself there.

Spitalfields and Brick Lane would be ideal. A short walk to Shoreditch and boxpark too

whathappenedtosummer23 · 15/08/2023 17:12

Wouldn’t bother with Camden, it’s pretty crap now. My 17 year olds prefer Spitalfields and brick lane. It feels less seedy too. No idea about where to stay.
