How to remove stains round taps?

Just moved and changed the taps in the downstairs bathroom but there is a grim indelible brown circle (wider than the new taps) from where the old ones used to be. What can I do to get rid of them, if anything? Help!

What is the material that the stain is on? Ceramic?
You could use Cif, a washing up scrubber, or my favourite clean all, baby bottle sterilising fluid. Love that stuff!

A lot depends on the actual stain. What caused it and what it is on. Different things work in different situations.

What I have found works for a lot of things though is applying a paste made with bicarbonate of soda mixed with a drop of washing up liquid and just sufficient water to make a thick sludge. Apply this to the stain. Leave for at least 10 minutes and then scrub with an old toothbrush or something similar.

Alternatively, if it is a build up of lime from hard water, dampen some kitchen roll with white vinegar and put it on the stain, making sure it is all covered, leaver for around 30 minutes and again scrub with an old toothbrush.

No guarantees though. Some stains have been there so long they are part of the structure and cannot be shifted

There's a trick using a 2 pence piece. Google it on YouTube.

Limescale often leaves brown crusted stains on taps
I soak a piece of folded kitchen roll in vinegar then wrap
It around the taps overnight then scrub with a toothbrush
I live in an area with incredibly hard water and this works
Also citric acid powder works to descale kettles or shower heads
Harpic 100% with the red top is the only toilet cleaner which works here too

I reckon a plastic scourer and some viakal (or the Lidl cheap version) will sort that out.

Andthereyougo · 13/08/2023 15:41

Viakal and an old toothbrush.

balconylife · 13/08/2023 15:51

Viakal limescale remover. Leave it on for at least half an hour then scrub with a toothbrush or if stubborn, repeat and scrape the area with a knife once the limescale has softened.

Barkeepers Friend for sure will shift that

Pinkest · 13/08/2023 16:15

Hi guys, I tried the viakal and the vinegar but no cigar. Need to get a Brillo pad

Pink stuff or barkeepers friend.
Or bleach left on for half an hour then washed off.
