Is it bonkers to career change at 43 from decent paying wfh job??

I'm considering a major career change and need a sense check please.

Am early 40s and have a mid-senior role in comms - it's decent pay that covers my bit of the mortgage and our living expenses. Current job can be done from home, 4 days a week and works well around the kids (11 and 14).

The trouble is, I don't find it fulfilling. I fell into this career by default. Started out in journalism, wanting to cover human interest/cultural issues - but fell into a niche of businesses journalism then B2B comms. I perform well in it and have recently been promoted and am on track for a more senior role (they told me) - but while it's very flexible and the people are really nice (though I mostly see them just on screen) - it's not what my heart wants.

I'm feel cut off WFH in a screen-based job and would love to work directly with people in a community setting, ideally in a caring role.

Would it be crazy/impossible to career change as an OT and retrain while still working in comms? Any other career suggestions?

I've found a 4-year p/t degree course and had a successful interview - but the training includes several weeks of F/T placements. This obvs rules out working during this placements. You can apply for NHS funding to train but it's not guaranteed and only 5k per year.

Married to DH on a similar salary and we both need to keep up our earnings to cover costs. I have around £10k savings.

WWYD? Stay put in satisfactory but unfulfilling role and find meaningful things outside of career, or pursue career change before the chance passes for good?

Honestly, the first option. Work is just work, you're disposable to an employer so it shouldn't be the part of your life you build fulfilment around. In my opinion.

I'd do the caring role voluntary

Does your employer offer corporate volunteering? So they pay you but you go off an work in a foodbank or help re-paint a community centre?

Where will you be in 5 years and 10 years if you stay where you are?
Where will you be in 5 years and 10 years if you make the move and it all goes well?
Where will you be in 5 years and 10 years, assuming that you now have new qualifications if you find that you have made a massive mistake and want to move jobs?

This is all really good advice, thanks everyone.
