What bit DP? (Pics)

DP got bitten three times yesterday while he was out, by the time I saw him each bite had a hard yellow head and were itchy and felt hot to touch.

This morning they're not so hard and yellow but there is a large patch of red skin around them and they're painful with the pain going up his arm.

He's had some antihistamines but they didn't do anything.

The photos show one bite on his inner arm and two closer together on the front of his other arm.

Keep taking the antihistamines, get some antihistamine cream on them, and draw a line around the outside. If it continues to grow, off to A&E

I’d say horse fly by the look of it.

Possibly a horsefly. I had a similar bite earlier in the week. Put TCP on the area to stop it itching and take an anti-allergy tablet. If it continues to swell see your GP for antihistamines. It is bloody painful, I know!

Thanks everyone, have drawn a line around it now, will get some cream and see how they go.

Dh is the expert at getting bitten. We now have treatment down to a fine art after much advice from pharmacists.
Piriton anti histamines and hydrocortisone sparingly twice a day for around 2 days with ibuprofen for any swelling.

I'd say horsefly as well. The bite isn't just them piercing the skin they almost rip it. Horrible bites, I normally get a really nasty reactions.
Nasty little buggers!

I had bites like this and pretty sure it was mosquito. I also react to horse fly bites like this but they tend to hurt at the time so you see the culprit.

I didn't take anything last time and I didn't touch the bites. No scratching. It went in about five days. Next time I might try all the treatments and see if it helps.

Sorry, just need to update and turns out DP has had them for 2 days, he fell asleep with the window open and woke up with them (I've been away with work so just assumed it happened when he was out yesterday)

If it carries on spreading, yes, go to urgent treatment centre, or A&E. My cat bit me years ago, and I was told that bites of any animal should be taken seriously if they are spreading. A course of penicillin did the trick for me.Please remember that we all have different reactions to bites, some of us are OK with anti histamines but others get infected or have extreme reactions.

I got bit by the same thing very recently. I put germolene on it and washed it with soapy water.

It started to look like cellulitis but calmed down and it's now just a funny colour but is taking time to go down.

Mine was never as big as this picture but followed the same pattern.

Horsefly by the looks of it. Skin Soft from Avon worked wonders and drew out the pus overnight and then it healed. Still have the bite marks some 4-weeks on.

Saverage · 13/08/2023 13:06

I had a couple of bites like that last week, I think they were probably mosquito. I took antihistamines and the only thing I had to put on them was witch hazel, which worked surprisingly well.

Confusinglyconfused · 13/08/2023 13:10

I've had similar before from I suspect a horse fly. Keep a close eye on it because mine turned into a full blown infection that tracked down my arm. Don't overthink it if the redness continues to spread, call 111 today or see your GP in the morning.

Antihistamines may be just enough though.
