Whereabouts are you? Are you near still water? Do you have ponds or stagnant water in your garden?

Medlady · 12/08/2023 19:44

Even in bright daylight at the moment. I was out yesterday between 12-2, not under trees or anything, and I have 4/5 new bites today. I think midge rather than mozzie though

heartsinvisiblefury · 12/08/2023 19:48

What are you using to help with the itching?

Only relief I can ever get is either the hot spoon or the device I bought on Amazon which does the same thing or heating up the bite.

I have some bites on my legs and arms
I.wss sat out in the garden a couple of evenings ago.I don't know if its mosquitoes but they are very itchy!

Summerisnearlyhere1 · 12/08/2023 20:03

Anthisan cream, it's formulated for bites and stings. Available on Amazon. Takes the itchiness away for a several hours I find.

I have one after sitting out late into the evening for the last couple of nights. Never happened to me in the UK before. Those freezing sprays are brilliant for taking the itch away.

Same where I am. Some mosquitoes but a lot more midges, more than I’ve seen for years. Their bites are so itchy! Even DH s getting bitten and he rarely is.

I recommend that too.

I’ve never known a year like it for bites, every week it just keeps happening, really nasty ones that itch so much, surrounding area swells, big red rash appears.I put hydrocortisone cream on and take an antihistamine, eventually disappears and then it all happens again.I’ve taken to spraying myself with Jungle anti bite spray before taking the dog out but now have 2 on my neck and one on my face.Im like an all you can eat buffet.Really gets me down, I’ve tried not using body cream makes no difference whatsoever. The only time it stopped was on holiday.

heartsinvisiblefury · 14/08/2023 13:21

Today has been worse! And it's raining - I am like a buffet 😀

There was one in my bedroom last night, and I had a new bite this morning. I can live with faffing around with anti-mozzie stuff on holiday, but it’ll get really old really quickly doing it at home.

We sat out on Thursday evening and I have a bit on my thigh (I was wearing shorts)
it was very sore and swollen and the red patch grew to about 4” circle, but has calmed down a lot now. I have been very good about not scratching it
I used some bite and sting cream but don’t think that helped. I have taken piriton and think that did help.

There was an article in New Scientist in May about how your choice of soap or body wash can react with your skin's natural oils to attract or repel mosquitoes. Maybe some of you are using different hygiene products this year?

The survey done used Dial, Dove, Simple Truth, and Native body washes. Native actually repelled mosquitoes.
"The Simple Truth body wash appeared to increase the attractiveness of all of the participants, measured by the number of times the mosquitoes landed on their body wash-exposed strips compared with their body wash-free strips. The Dove wash had a similar effect, but the increase in attractiveness was only pronounced for three of the participants.
Dial’s body wash similarly made the participants more attractive to mosquitoes, but to a lesser extent than Simple Truth’s or Dove’s.
In contrast, the mosquitoes tended to avoid the strips washed in the Native body wash, but displayed a particularly strong aversion towards one participant’s Native-washed strip.
This suggests the body washes’ fragrances and the participants’ individual odours combined to create a scent that was detectable to the mosquitoes.
“Our study highlights the importance of the interaction between the specific soap chemicals and the body odour of each person in determining whether a person would become more or less attractive to mosquitoes after applying soap to their skin,” "
