What age is the child who did these spellings?

And what age would you expect the child to get these words right?

The child in question asks me to give them words to spell, they think it's fun. I'm not forcing "work" on them in the holidays.
The correct spellings are my writing, the first set is my child's.

They’re year 1 spellings at our school

WandaWonder · 12/08/2023 11:24

Are you asking if your child is gifted?

Year 1/2

Highdaysandholidays1 · 12/08/2023 11:25

your child is spelling phonetically (quite well!) but if this persisted past a certain age, then perhaps they may be dyslexic. My dd is 17 and spells like that. She simply can't 'see' if words are spelled right or wrong and so spells phonetically. Some words, through repeated exposure and practice, she spells correctly, she also works spell-checkers and asks a lot. Ultimately, though, she can't spell!

PossiblyNotOne · 12/08/2023 11:26

Hmm well they’re not doing cursive writing yet so 6?

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/08/2023 11:26

Just finished year 1 but a good speller.

SkipHopJumpSplatWallop · 12/08/2023 11:27

I’ve seen many children writing like this by the start of year 1 (working in schools) and most children writing like this by the time they start year 2. So as an average I would say 6, but quite possibly 5.

Allmarbleslost · 12/08/2023 11:28

5 or 6

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 12/08/2023 11:28

Agree with previous post, end of ks1 but every child I'd different. One of mine could spell but didn't understand the meaning and another understood the meanings but struggled with the spelling.

FoodFann · 12/08/2023 11:28

Whoever is saying these are year 1 spelling words… BS. The Nat Curr. sets the spelling words. Here are year 1’s words, the same for the whole country.

I would be surprised if the child OP is referring to is anywhere between 6 and 12.

5-6, going into year 2?

mummyof2boys30 · 12/08/2023 11:29

My 11 year old couldnt spell any of those, or even close but is dyslexic

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/08/2023 11:29

I have taught 5 year olds who can spell phonetically like that. Some but not all.

TinkerbellefromYorkshire · 12/08/2023 11:29

Going on my experience with Grandsons who are all ASD and above average intelligence.. l have no idea.. one knew all his vowels age two and if you gave him a word and asked for the vowels in it.. he would reel them off.
My daughter also ASD was reading books for age 9/10 age five.
Nerotypical.. l would say age 5.
