Does anyone know what this engraving might be?

I have an engraved ring, quite old.
I wondered if the symbol meant anything?

Does anyone know what this engraving might be?

I would hazard a guess it's Masonic, but I'm no expert.

Mmhmmn · 12/08/2023 11:15

Have you tried Googling a reverse mage search with it?

Mmhmmn · 12/08/2023 11:15

NCembarassed · 12/08/2023 11:14

This one looks similar OP, if you look at the second image (not the compass and set square).

That's definitely Masonic

FrivolousTreeDuck · 12/08/2023 11:16

Ooh, yes - the fleur de lys in that second image is just the same.

medianewbie · 12/08/2023 14:25

It says the front of 2nd image is masonic but back is just 3 initials tho ?

@MmHmm no: I don't know how?

It looks more like two letters to me? Looks similar in style to the signet ring I have that was my grandfathers.
Do you know who it belonged to or have you just bought it?
Isn’t an obvious Masonic symbol that I can find.

Balloonhearts · 12/08/2023 14:47

Is it a family crest of some kind? The kind that used to be used to seal letters.

Neverseenbefore · 12/08/2023 14:48

Probably a family crest. I don’t think it’s Masonic.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/08/2023 14:55

It's someone's initials.

MuskyCarbolicSmokeBallCo · 12/08/2023 14:56

I don't think it's Masonic - DF and DGF are masons - but it could be Christian iconography.

The fish is possibly Ichthys and the first of the two letters for Jesus (though not sure about the second)

painochocolate · 12/08/2023 14:59

J and a fish

AdaColeman · 12/08/2023 15:27

It looks like two initials to me, D and J.
The Christian fish symbol was usually formed from a single continuous line, while this has separate elements.

@medianewbie Have you had a look at the ring's hallmark? That will tell you the ring's maker, date and place, which would give you some starting clues.

@MuskyCarbolicSmokeBallCo
That was my thought too :)

It's just JD, a simple monogram.

Found this online

medianewbie · 19/08/2023 12:17

the ring belongs to me (recently purchased though)
I think it's a J & a christian fish symbol (though it could also be a 'D')
Was sold to me as a 'Masonic ring from Russia' but I don't think either are true..
Hallmarks are 1919 Birmingham. I like it anyway.

Heraldic artist's daughter here. I think it is a fish and a fishhook (google fish hook in heraldic art and there was at least one noted like this depicted historically in heraldry). Presumably items from someone's coat of arms that they chose to represent the arms on the ring. Not masonic, I believe (grandfather and great grandfather were masons so we had access to masonic books and regalia when my grandfather died and no symbols like this (the second ring posted by pp though, I agree, definitely masonic).

AutumnCrow · 19/08/2023 12:59

Heraldic artist's daughter here.

I think that's one of the most brilliant 'heres' I've ever seen on Mumsnet Grin

(And very informative.)

Turquioseblue · 19/08/2023 13:13

It's a fish fleur-de-lis. You can find it in Google images.

medianewbie · 20/08/2023 10:09

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork:
thank you! I knew if I posted on MN I'd get (as ever) a range of input including some 'amateurs' and also possibly some professional. MN is a brilliant place! It's helpful to know its not Masonic as I don't think I'd have the right to / be comfortable wearing it. I was drawn to it amongst a pile of things. I shall choose the Christian interpretation / heraldic meaning of 'one who despite not knowing his enemies strength ventures forth with confidence'. I really like my new ring.

Good for you, OP. I shall picture you "venturing forth with confidence", wearing your lovely ring!
