I have dyslexia and some type of learning difficulties. I don't know what. All I know is i did not go to mainstream school.

Anyway just an example . Say someone sent me a picture of a restaurant name on here. And I wanted to look it up. I will read the name go to Google to type the name in. But time I have got to Google I have forgotten the name. So I have to keep checking

Also when I'm on mumsnet I have to quote most stuff. Although I know what's been said as a whole. If I'm replying i have to quote and keep checking whats Been said several times as I write my reply

Is all this just a part of dyslexia ?

Short term memory issues are very much a part of dyslexia. I feel your pain!

Yes it’s working memory - holding information in your brain whilst you do something related to that information, like looking something up or doing a maths problem. It’s part of executive functioning which is very much affected by dyslexia.

Oh yes it's with math/ numbers to. If there's a mix of words and numbers I have to separate it. And then as you explain above its hard to hold the information.

Executive functioning can also be affected by ADHD and ASD and other neurodevelopmental conditions. I believe Dyslexia co-occurs with ADHD more frequently than it occurs in the general population, I read a paper on this a while back but can’t remember much else about it.

So you might possibly think about exploring ADHD and whether that provides an explanation for what you’re experiencing.

I definitely don't have ADHD I'm to lazy for that 🤣

I don't know what executive functioning means .

Oh I do this. Constantly. My short term memory is shocking. I have wondered if I am dyslexic but never been tested.

Executive functioning skills are all the thinking skills you need to independently plan and carry out a goal - daily goals like getting dressed or making something to eat as well as much bigger goals like getting a new job.

It includes things like working memory, planning, prioritising, concentration and attention, ability to shift focus, emotional regulation, organisation of self and time. I was just looking for a definitive list of skills from a reputable source but I haven’t found one yet.

Could be ADD though - Attention deficit without the hyperactivity element.

If it's also happening with maths you could have dyscalculia in addition to dyslexia.

theveryhungrybum · 12/08/2023 12:37

The example you gave about separating numbers and words indicates that you struggle with working memory when the cognitive load of a task is increased. Ie, it's hard for you to retain information when the task has elements added. Working memory issues are common with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyscalculia (working with numbers). If nothing else, it would be worthwhile getting some testing done so that you can be given strategies to help you.

Probably. I just forget what the maths one is called. We see dyslexia said alot so it's more out there. I don't think its fully understood though lots of people think it's just about spelling. I don't fully understand myself. But yeah probably dyscalculia as well. It was probably all looked into when I was a kid hence special needs school. I just wasn't told sweet FA

My daughter has Working memory issues resulting in difficulty with spelling which is classified as specific learning disability therefore Dyslexic. Her reading is fine. Sometimes I wonder if took to ADHD assessment would this working memory issues also result in her having ADHD. Lots of the resources the physiologist gave me to help her reference ADHD.

maybebalancing · 12/08/2023 13:41

I have dyslexia ( assessed at school) nowadays I would also have been given a dyscalculia diagnosis.

Part of the assessment is checking how many items in a sequence you can remember.
My family tease me about my very poor working memory.
I make lots of notes, take photos etc.

My ds and actually DH have ADHD and it is similar but not the same. My memory is worse but there are similar executive function issues.

LesbianNaan · 12/08/2023 13:50

I’m the same. I’m diagnosed autistic, suspect ADHD (non hyperactive type).
I cant remember anything!
If anyone quotes directions or phone numbers to me my instinct is to zone out so I have to fight that anyway, but more than tiny chunks of information and I’m lost.
