Lost, clueless and dealing with intestate

Looking for some friendly advice because I feel completely lost and clueless.

My dear mum has just died 😢

Unfortunately, it seems as though she hasn't left a will but has apparently made provision for her funeral to be paid Via a funeral plan. She has also left about 15k, some bonds and half a house that she owned with her ex husband.

I understand that she has died intestate but after that I'm a bit lost.

What do I need to do legally, to make sure her affairs are taken care of and divided fairly between my siblings and her ex? I don't have much money for legal advice but I'd really like to do things properly.

I know Google has the answer but I feel so overwhelmed trying to research it.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The admin is manageable - people do this all the time, but it's understandable if you're feeling overwhelmed just now.

Start with the Government step by step guide, and the Tell Us Once service (step 2 in the link)
https://www.gov.uk/after-a-death

You'll be able to deal with most of the financial admin of the estate yourself but you may need some professional legal help to work out what to do with the shared ownership of the house. The first question is whether it was owned as Joint Tenants (in which case her half transfers straight to her ex husband) or Tenants In Common in which case ownership of her share passes to you and your siblings and you'll need to negotiate what to do with her ex. The Land Registry should tell you the answer to that question.

What to do after someone dies

The steps you must take when someone dies - register a death, report a death with Tell Us Once, coroners, funerals and death abroad.

Start here and apply to administer the estate . The ex does not inherit anything. However he does obviously get his half of the jointly owned house.

How was the house owned, was it joint tenants or tenants in common, unfortunately if its the former the ex now owns the whole house.

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers
