Just moved home, worst nights sleep ever.

Have 2 dogs who haven't a clue why we aren't still at home.
Tried to leave them downstairs like normal, they freaked. Crying, howling.

So I bring them to my room to help them settle for a few nights.

They won't stay on the floor. Keep jumping on the bed, so I have 2 dogs on my feet.

Then they react to every single noise thought the night. It's a much busier area and there's a festival happening one dog is basically Barking all night (not normal for him he's obviously very confused!)

Then at 6am something wakes me, squawking it's head off. Sound like a seagull or something (we're in the middle of a big city)

I barely slept the night before because I was preparing to move and I had a kid in the bed as we had taken bedframes down and took old mattresses to the tip.

I've so much to do but I'm just absolutely knackered 😭

Maybe I should have posted this in the dog house.

How do I help the poor things settle :(

They will settle. You’re there. But at the moment they are probably sensing your anxiety and stress. So, you need to try and settle too.

I feel your pain, I barely slept the first few nights after I moved. Increased neighbour, cat in meltdown. Hopefully the dogs will get used to it soon

What normally helps them with things like fireworks? Try that.

Mine are helped by having somewhere to den, melatonin, Vince the Vet calming drops, TTouch ear strokes and cuddles but you're probably not set up for any of that in the middle of a move. You could try a diffuser like Adaptil or Pet Remedy, they don't need any further intervention once you've set them up so they may be more practical right now.

Also try to minimise the inevitable chaos immediately around them, set up a safe space in a low traffic area if you can. Likimats (frozen to last longer) or safe bones/ chew toy to release endorphins.

Posted too soon... They will be fine but perhaps not immediately. Hope the rest of the move goes well.

Catsfrontbum · 12/08/2023 07:54

Calming dog music and likimats are great.

I barely slept the first night in our new house - and I don't have any pets! It was the move stress, unfamiliarity, initial problems with heating meant it was freezing (assuming this isn't a problem ATM!), strange noises. Within days I was sleeping better there than I had in our previous house!

What would help calm the dogs down? What do you give them if there's fireworks? Have they got somewhere obviously theirs to retreat to?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 12/08/2023 08:01

It's totally normal for the dogs to be stressed in this scenario. They're in a new place with unfamiliar smells, sounds and sights, plus a stressed owner.

You just need to give them time. Lots of people put their dogs into boarding or kennels when they move as all the movement and hustle and bustle can be really confusing for them.

They'll settle once they've had a chance to get used to things.

SnowWay · 12/08/2023 08:29

There was actually loads of fireworks due to the festival too 😢

They don't usually bother them at 'home'.

I'll set up the crate tonight with a cover over, extra blankie and such.
