Why do so many people on here now avoid swearing?

I don’t mean that they use different words but they write stuff like sh1t, f*k and cnt. Why do that? I’m going to read f**k as fuck, you know it means fuck, so just damn well write fuck.

Rant over.

What annoys me is the asterisks fuck up the formatting, especially when there are multiple words bleeped out, so it randomly goes back and forth between normal and bold.

As I discovered trying to insert that quotation! 😄

PriamFarrl · 12/08/2023 08:03

Typing f k is actually swearing. We all know they mean fuck and we read it as fuck so if they're comfortable using the word fuck, why not add the extra letters?

I think that’s what annoys me. We all know they mean fuck. We all read it as fuck. They know it means fuck. They used to do it in newspapers and the like out of politeness but there is no need here.

I do it out of absolute habit because if I always type f*ck I won't get flagged at work if I slip up and type the actual word.

Fuck.

That felt therapeutic 😂 but it's genuinely because I am worried about switching between the two incase I get confused about where I'm typing 😬 it's happened to a colleague who's IM history at work then got pulled!

67pennies · 12/08/2023 08:31

People presume you'll get your account suspended if you do it? And then there's the politeness/'not the done thing' aspect of it on websites and in life etc.

You are making someone else (and yourself) say fuck in their (and your) head if you write f**k though, so a bit pointless.

Whydoifeellikeaneel · 12/08/2023 08:39

I'm a Christian and don't feel comfortable swearing. It's not that I'm a prude: far from it. In my pre Christian days, I swore like a sailor and sometimes an old gem will pop into my mind if I stub my toe or something similarly infuriating! Ultimately, it doesn't honour God so I wouldn't consciously swear. I don't judge other people who swear: I'd have a hard time getting along with 90 % of the people in my life if I did! But personally I don't. A while ago I was quoting something that someone wrote as part of a discussion on mumsnet, and they had sworn. I didn't feel comfortable typing out the word so used an asterisk.

Hyposensitive · 12/08/2023 09:03

I use lots of different forums and groups online, and this is one of the rare few you're allowed to swear on, so sometimes I forget and censor my swears

pickledandpuzzled · 12/08/2023 09:27

I struggle to use the words, but rarely swear so don't need to asterisk as a PP said.

I dislike swearing irl, find it aggressive and unsettling, but on here it's fine- it doesn't feel aggressive at all, just expressive.

I wish I knew what the difference is, as I find 'out there' quite distressing with the effing and blinding on every corner. I feel genuinely on edge and at risk.

Weird world.

That’s perfectly reasonable. You don’t want to use those words so you don’t use them. Much better than a prudish use of an asterisk that has the exact same effect as writing the actual word.

@Aquamarine1029 I'm howling at "Fuck those sites." 🤣🤣🤣

Charrington · 12/08/2023 10:48

@Whydoifeellikeaneel I thought swearing in the biblical god-offending context meant stuff like
“By the gods…”, “I swear on Jupiter’s big toe” rather than “fuck me that hurt!” when you stub a toe.

I know some derive from religious phrases, eg “bloody” being a shortened version of “by Our Lady” and I can understand that being problematic. Or the less oblique Jayzusss.

Is it ok to say “sugar” and “fudge” ? I can’t honestly see why God would find the big sister versions of those offensive. I rather imagine the Old Testament God got through a few of them himself.

CallieQ · 12/08/2023 19:30

Coming right up, with a C bomb chaser 😁

My fave! 😆

CandyflossKaren · 12/08/2023 21:15

It's very twee and snowflakey...netmums is probably better for them

Quisquam · 12/08/2023 21:48

I belong to another forum, that’s PG. I can’t afford to get mixed up - I’d get banned on the other one!

AceofPentacles · 12/08/2023 22:10

It's definitely much less fucking sweary these days

Annaishere · 12/08/2023 22:12

Good question!
In Ephesians 4:29 it says:
'Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.'

It is generally accepted in psychology that there is a link between the language we use and our thoughts, which then has a knock on effect on other areas of our lives. It says in Phillipians to always focus on what is good and noble; basically to try to stay centred on the positive.

I have found that there is a link between between how I speak and how I think. It's a chicken egg situation, but when I'm not swearing, I also tend to be more compassionate, and my thought processes seem to be different too. When I swear, a certain hardness in my personality comes up to the fore. It's really weird! I'm not saying that people who swear are hard and people who don't are lovely by Virtue of not swearing. I'd have no friends if that was the case!

I do know of some Christians who won't even say 'sugar' because they feel the underlying connotation is the same but personality I disagree. I certainly don't get the same satisfaction from saying 'gosh' as 'f*ing hell' but I sense the very subtle shift in my character any time I do. Something bristles under the surface.

I dont expect many people will be able to relate to this unless they are also something of Ned Flanders too. I like me better when I don't swear, something I would have not believed if someone had have told me in the past!

Puritanism? Class thing? Can’t be an educated motherfucker if you write the actual
word?

I think it's the opposite actually - I know lots of middle-class performative swearers (me included although I'm also ADHD and it's part of the blurting thing).

It's how you show you are a bit bohemian/creative rather than dull middle management Grin.

I'm not a regular middle class person, I'm a cool middle-class person.

chicjen · 12/08/2023 22:45

@Whydoifeellikeaneel I had no idea bloody originated from this! Every day's a school day on MN. I'll be thinking of this tomorrow morning in church now (that sounds sarcastic sorry, I actually do go to church)
