I'm considering working a few nights doing pizza delivery. If you do this sort of work is it worth while? Do you get tips/ cash in hand / fuel allowance or a discount on food ?

I really need some extra cash so thinking the nights the children are at their dads I could pick up some hrs.

Fill me in please

Helpful bump for you. I used to do this years ago and you got min wage. £1 a drop if using your own vehicle plus cash tips. I think it’s all changed since then though.

Thanks so much for replying. I think no matter what I earn it will be a few extra quid rather than wasting a night doing nothing. Did you get many tips?

It's more deliveroo/just eat/uber eats these says than a restaurant-specific delivery service. What sort of location do you live in - a small town or a big city, is there a big student population in term time? Would you use a car or a scooter or a bike?

DH did it for a while between jobs at one of the chain ones a couple of years ago (he'd been accepted at a job but there was a wait of a few months before he could start). He got either min wage or just above it, paid weekly, then every month he was paid a fuel allowance on top of that. He got to keep any tips he was given and also got a discount on food.

The company didn't charge for delivery before but they do now so I don't know if things have changed since then as the cost of fuel has gone up so I'd maybe guess that helps cover the fuel allowance costs now.

They were short staffed at the time so he was able to offer to work as much as he wanted which really helped us out money-wise until he started the other job.

Dominos do their own deliveries. One of my DC s did it at uni & it was well worth it for them as a student but I don't know the details. They did get a free pizza with the shift, I think.

I can see it being very much 'it depends'. Who it's for, what the area is like, that sort of thing.

But check out insurance. To do it properly, you need the right insurance for your car and I can see that being quite expensive, and it's likely that most people don't have it and hope for the best. However, if you have an accident or get caught, because the Police do sometimes crack down on this sort of thing, you'll likely lose your car and face a heavy fine/points.

I'd look at babysitting, bar work or pretty much anything before fast food delivery.

DS delivers for Domino's during the holidays and in his uni town. It's flexible and works well for him - typically he does about 15 hrs a week at 10.50 hr. Even though he feels the petrol allowance is a bit stingy it's definitely worth doing. He would admit it's also not the hardest way of some ££ so it doesn't take his focus away from studying.

It's for an independent pizza restaurant where I live, they have about 5 restaurants spread out but not a well know man chain as such.

Even if I got £50 for a nights work, it would go towards something . Not to sound grabby but what would a realistic night with tips look like?

I imagine tips are dismal now. Pre covid I always tipped, often by means of paying at the front door and telling them to keep the change. Now I pay online and never have cash, so I don't tip. I imagine many are the same.

Admittedly I'm the same. I v rarely have cash to hand now.

Well I might just give it a go, it's a few pound in my pocket

The decider on tips will be whether you have to deal with cash. Many delivery services don't deal in cash at all now. Obviously the role is more complex and, arguably, more stressful, working with cash but the tips would be a lot better.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 11/08/2023 16:22

You will not earn £50 and evening, delivering for just one restaurant. More like £20 + tips, most people don’t tip, or may give you £1.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/08/2023 16:33

Well if you're working for 5 hours, you should earn more than £50 as that's what NMW is.

The other thing to watch out for would be if they try and tell you that you're 'self employed' which would get them out of NMW and also entitlement to holiday pay.

Strawberryfieldsforeverrr · 11/08/2023 16:47

I think you'd probably do better witnessing or behind a bar, it'd be safer as well.

DixonD · 11/08/2023 16:47

My husband used to do this years ago for a takeaway (not pizza). He used to earn £50 a night and this was 15 years ago.

twiddlewiddle · 11/08/2023 17:02

I've enquired... it would be a flat rate of £3 per hr and £2.90 - £3.50 per actual delivery made. I'm sure you'd do 3 deliveries an hr ? So say just shy of £12 an hr?

Well it depends on how many deliveries there are and how far apart they are. How big is their delivery radius and is it a densely populated area?

Do they pay for fuel, or is this on you?

Legally, you should earn at least NMW for time worked.

I know, I thought that too. I'm still thinking it would be an easy way to get a few bob without any commitment to them. I could work when I wanted in the evening and if I don't make much, well there's nothing wasted only my time.

You’ll need to change your car insurance to do it, a friend looked into it when they were made redundant and it was quite pricey.

Yes this is the part that will crucify me. Isn't it frustrating when people that are willing to do extra for the betterment of their families get corked.

I did this at a fish and chip shop. The base rate was low, with top up per delivery.

However, there’s no guarantee how many orders will be placed and often I’d end up working for less than min wage as I’d be sitting around waiting for an order, so you’re not being paid then (other than your £3 odd an hour).
Also, they’d give you like 4 orders to deliver right at the end of your shift, so you were delivering past your working hours, but only being paid the £1.20 per delivery, not the hourly rate, as they said we’d finished! I didn’t stay long……

I did delivery for a local fast food restaurant that paid a much better base rate and wasn’t per delivery so much. That was worth doing, as I remember, so check the terms.

All these deliveries will be ‘off the books’ so they don’t care about min wage!
